Cartoon: One last gotcha (my final comic)

After 18 years and more than 1,600 political cartoons, I’ve decided to retire my weekly comic. This is a decision long in the making, one I’ve slowly walked myself up to over the years, and have recently decided is time to commit to. My last original cartoon was two weeks ago. Today’s comic is a re-run based on my Mr. Gotcha comic, which became a bit of a meme.

I will continue to run The Nib in an almost full time capacity, publishing and editing our magazine and daily comics, while making some space in my life for other kinds of comics that I’m excited about but have never had the time to fully pursue.

You can read a longer statement about this on Medium, but I wanted to take a minute to thank Daily Kos for the support of my work over many years—and the readers here who have read it week after week, year after year. Kos is a rare outlet these days, in that they actively support and pay a good number of political cartoonists. With the collapse of print media, the number of outlets supporting this kind of work severely diminished and not many websites picked up the slack, to be honest. Daily Kos was one of the rare ones that did, however, and that deserves to be celebrated.

I hope you enjoyed my work over the years, particularly in the darkest days of Trump and the pandemic. I’ve been doing this work since the Bush administration and, my friends, I think I’ve had my fill. Thank you for reading.
