I’ve read articles about the psychological reasons why many people are quick to blame the victim, but such people still aggravate me a great deal.
Victim-blamers presumably tell themselves things like this:
- “I will never be poor or unemployed because I’m not a lazy bum!”
- “I will never be assaulted by a cop because I obey the law!”
- “I will never suffer from a serious illness because I eat healthy and exercise!”
I wonder: is deluding oneself into believing that everyone who suffered must have somehow deserved it actually effective in freeing oneself from worry??? Are victim-blamers happier and less anxiety prone than those of us who have more empathy?
