There was a lot of focus on the outbreak in Provincetown, M.A. over the Fourth of July weekend, but too many are focusing on the 74-75% positive case in fully vaccinated individuals.
But if we look at the big picture numbers, it actually proves just how well the vaccines work.
The normal population of Provincetown is around 3,000, but the summer tourist season can increase the total population to 60,000.
Let's assume 50,000 over Fourth of July Weekend and 70% of adults vaxxed:
70% of 50,000 = 35,000 vaxxed.
~900 total cases from the outbreak, with 75% fully vaxxed = 675 fully vaxxed breakthrough infections. Out of 35,000 = 2% breakthrough infections.
8 total hospitalizations. Officials did not provide a vaxxed/unvaxxed breakdown, so let's assume an even split - 4 fully vaxxed hospitalizations = 0.01% of fully vaxxed ended up being hospitalized.
Zero deaths.
Bottom line - vaccines work.
Just as car seats and seat belts prevent injuries and deaths from car crashes, masks and vaccines prevent injuries and deaths from COVID.
