WASHINGTON — The Biden administration has decided that most Americans should get a coronavirus booster shot eight months after they completed their initial vaccination, and could begin offering the extra shots as early as mid-September, according to two administration officials familiar with the discussions.
Pfizer/BioNTech has been saying for some weeks one or more additional Covid shots will be needed for those receiving their vaccine.
Vaccinations have been ticking up in the last few weeks as Covid has been raging, especially in areas with low rates of vaccinations.
As of yesterday, 59.8% of all Americans have had at least one shot of Covid vaccine and 50.8% are fully vaccinated, according to the CDC.
Vaccinations vary widely by region as Vermont has 86% of its adult population receiving at least one shot (77% fully vaccinated). Wyoming now ranks last with 53.5% of those over 18 receiving a dose (46.9% fully vaccinated).
Vaccinations in the US began in December and reached a peak averaging over 3.3 million shots per day in mid-April. They then declined to about 500,000 a day around July 19, according to Bloomberg’s data tracker. They are currently averaging 769,000 injections per day.
Worldwide, 4.74 billion doses of various vaccines have been given.
