As a contrast to Joe Biden’s masterful and concise explanation of the strategic situation in Afghanistan, England’s Parliament was in high dudgeon today, to the point you can imagine England trying to re-invade. (This should be contrasted with the most recent mooted army deployment, which was to provide trucks—sorry HGVs—to supply empty supermarkets.)
Interestingly, about a year before the total meltdown on English politics that lead to needing the army to supply supermarkets, the BBC produced an interesting documentary on the then-current crisis in Afghanistan. It’s sweeping, but a brief summary would be that the simple, emotive stories politicians tell leave them and us befuddled and unable to see the strategic picture.
