Update:
Mea Culpa —
While HuffPost did use what I think is a too cutesy and clever title for their main page article considering the cultural significance of this, it turns out that Jeopardy and who hosts it is a far bigger deal than I realized. Consider the coverage today as Richards steps down probably under great pressure from the network.
Not that it matters:
The first website I look at in the morning is HUFFPOST just to see what their editors consider to be the top story. I don’t consider HUFFPOST to be a particularly useful general news website.
For news and opinion I look at The New York Times and The Washington Post. With different site designs both usually put their top stories in the upper left corner. This morning both articles are about the Taliban (right, enlarge).
I find RawStory useful because they aggregate news shortly after the stories break and include summaries of articles published on subscription websites like Daily Beast and The Wall Street Journal. I also use Google News to find additional articles on subjects I’m interested in.
Eventually I get around to checking out Daily Kos but primarily for the staff and community member opinion stories. I don’t use it as a source for news though I assume lots of readers do. If I didn’t have subscriptions to The Times and The Post I would also use Daily Kos for news.
Back to HUFFPOST and the subject of this diary:
I was surprised to see an article about the new host of Jeopardy as the top of the page HUFFPOST story even above these stories:
HUFFPOST generally goes for what are intended to be clever short titles for their top of the site main page story. They always or almost always differ from the title on the actual story.
For this morning’s top story I suppose someone thought the play on words “double jeopardy” was too cute by half, and they congratulated themselves for adding two alliterations “(new) Trebek in trouble” and “putrid podcasts” to complete the title.
They may have considered this to be clickbait but in fact I think the actual title, “Incoming ‘Jeopardy!’ Host Mike Richards Apologizes For Sexist Remarks” might have prompted more people to read the article.
I don’t care a whit about what happens to Jeopardy and didn’t so much as scan the article itself. I know other people do but I think it belonged to stay in the entertainment section where it also appears and not as a lead story.
I can’t imagine how the HUFFPOST editors considered this cultural at best, entertainment at worst, story to take precedence over articles about Afghanistan, Haiti, Covid, and the California governor recall. The Mike Lindell story is even more important than what happens to a Jeopardy host.
