From local Houston news sources:
The Texas Rangers are being called in to investigate after the Brazoria County District Attorney's Office found out about potential "irregularities" in the district clerk's office, specifically regarding the jury assembly process.
And also:
Brazoria County District Attorney Tom Selleck said, "The law requires jurors to be selected at random and it is this process that is alleged to have been conducted improperly."
To add a little context, Brazoria County is a suburban/exurban area south of Houston, on the way to Galveston. It includes, for example, the area of the local antimask councilman who recently died of Covid-19. In the complex political Matrix of the Greater Houston area, this is definitely one of the reddest areas. [I stand corrected, a comnenter noted that Dickinson, home of the dead anti-masker is in Galveston County, not Brazoria County, which is nevertheless dominated by the GOP for now anyway].
And not surpringly, here is the non-random nature of the jury selection that was being engineered:
We have identified four families whose loved ones were tried by all white juries," said Quanell X [a local community activist]. "There are cases, I believe, will have to be overturned because of purposed racial bias, on purpose, against those defendants."
The woman who appears to have been organizing this is in an elected position, which she has held since 2010. It's not clear how long she's been doing this. She resigned immediately after these activities were revealed, late last week. But we've not heard the end of this story yet. Not by a long shot And if I was a betting man, I would be thinking that this lady may be ending up in prison.
But then again, it's Texas. The governor will probably pardon her.
I will update this as more of the undoubtedly ugly details emerge.
Edit added.. Here's a link. But better stories will come out soon I think.
