It is now explicitly obvious that living in a red state is a serious and imminent threat to one's life. Some examples: the recent winter storm in Texas that exposed the faults of their poorly designed electrical grid, the red state governors (in places like Texas and Florida) passing laws to prevent businesses or schools from passing Covid-related safety measures, or the permit-free gun laws that are increasingly common throughout red America. And now this new abortion law in Texas.
Add it all up and a few possibilities emerge. For one thing, the residents of those states may really want to live in life-threatening environments. In that case, there's not much we can do for them. However, if a majority of the public in those crazy red states are actually unhappy about some or most of these problems, that's where democracy is supposed to kick in. If they want public health and safety, there is absolutely no reason why they can't vote for it themselves.
Unfortunately, on a lot of these red state issues, I doubt there’s much in the way of majority opposition. Even if there were, who knows how well that majority impulse may be thwarted through undemocratic voting restrictions. So that leaves either a thwarted majority or a terrorized minority with only one other legitimate option that I can think of: getting out. Moving, however, can be intimidating. Especially when it comes to moving to a different state, and possibly leaving behind a lifetime of connections and memories, moving can be intimidating. Nevertheless, and I mean this in all seriousness, if there are people who want to try and save their own lives by getting out of their failed states of Republican incompetence, I really do think there should be some kind of organization to help them.
Think of it: we’ve just seen more than 100,000 people evacuated from Afghanistan in order to help them escape Taliban control. Well, what about the hundreds of thousands if not millions of people trapped in life-threatening conditions in red states dominated by our own version on an American Taliban? Those people also need help. Quite frankly, they may need to be evacuated.
Unfortunately, I’m not an economist or a businessman. I’m not going to start an organization. But I would certainly be happy to donate to and/or work with any organization dedicated to the cause of evacuating democrats, leftists, or otherwise sane people who want or desperately need to escape a red state in order to better secure their own life and liberty. The kind of organization I have in mind would help them relocate to safer Blue States, provide funds to ease them through their transition, and possibly aid in job placement as well.
This may all sound humorous. But I personally mean all of this quite seriously. There are innocents in red states who are in danger and need to get out. And I wish I could help them.
