Here’s the latest news out of North Carolina:
There are few people more maligned in ultra-conservative circles than George Soros, the Hungarian-born investor and philanthropist who has donated millions to Democratic causes and candidates.
U.S. Rep. Ted Budd, a Donald Trump-backed candidate in North Carolina’s 2022 U.S. Senate race, has a loose business connection with the billionaire activist, according to records with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
A Soros investment firm was the largest shareholder of AgriBioTech, a seed company led by Budd’s father that filed for bankruptcy in 2000, securities filings show. Budd was a shareholder but was not an officer.
Soros’ shares were held by Quantum Partners LDC, an investment fund managed by Soros Fund Management LLC, the filings show. Soros was one of two people with voting power over Quantum’s shares, which constituted 7.6% of AgriBioTech’s stock.
AgriBioTech’s bankruptcy led to controversy of its own related to a loan the company received from the Budd family, a topic detailed in a Washington Post article published in August.
Meanwhile, the Club For Growth, which is backing Budd’s candidacy, is trying to take down Pat McCrory (R. NC):
‘
Charlotte fans watching the first Carolina Panthers game of the season will see a football-themed political ad taking on U.S. Senate candidate Pat McCrory, the city’s former mayor and former North Carolina governor.
The ad attacks McCrory for his 2016 gubernatorial re-election bid loss to Democrat Roy Cooper, saying he was “disloyal” to then-candidate Donald Trump and was the only Republican incumbent to lose a statewide race that year.
“Why? McCrory quit on his team, publicly trashing Trump. Disloyal, liberal, loser,” said the ad, which was purchased by Club For Growth Action, which is backing U.S. Rep. Ted Budd in the Republican primary.
It is the third television ad from Club For Growth, which promised to spent at least $5 million on Budd’s behalf. The group is currently airing a television ad across the state, as part of a $3 million campaign, promoting Trump’s endorsement of Budd.
Let the GOP duke it out but remember, Democracy and Health are on the ballot next year and we need to get ready to flip North Carolina Blue. Click below to donate and get involved with the North Carolina Democratic candidate of your choice:
