Well, we all now know what happend in those hallowed halls of the United State Supreme Court. Abortion, as a right in the state of Texas, no longer exists. It is as dead as the mouldering bones of my ancestors. What those neanderthals in the Texas legislature did was stunning. What’s next, burkas?
Abortion is the wedge. yes. But the issue, once again, is still race. This court's refusal to assert its right—indeed its dark-of-the-night decision—to judge in favor of the states is an outright assault even on Marbury v. Madison (1803) which is the basic underpinning of our judicial system.
The Texas law is a legal contortion which will have enormously destructive effect on elections and electoral outcomes. Texas is now a minoritarian "democracy." The same "reasoning" will be used in every aspect of American life. Guns and abortion are just for openers. This is Jim Crow in an Armani suit.
Disgustingly aided by the Roberts court,The Republican Party in Texas, and soon enough in many other states in the center of the country, has sealed off access to the federal courts for the protection of even the most basic rights, starting with abortion and guns. Even worse (if that's possible) it seals off the ability of any but the well off to legal challenge of a law in court.
Next up, Texas will now deal with elections.
We've entered a whole new world in which sovereignty is simply stripped away from We the People and handed over to gerrymandered state legislatures whose interests are at odds with those of the citizenry.
This cannot stand. Texas needs to wake up. We are either "e pluribus unum" or we are a loose federation of parochial political entities, each with its own version of "freedom."
This devolution of the American experiment since Ronald Reagan is mind bending.
The free world stands on the sidelines in absolute shock at what we are doing to ourselves. Our enemies celebrate.
