The Trump GOP and other anti-choicers have zero understanding of what motivates women to seek an abortion.Women are contemplating whether they have the emotional and financial wherewithal to support another human being through decades of life.
Over and over Republicans publicly talk about changing “hearts and minds.” They claim that ultra-sound images are changing the decisions of pregnant women. But pregnant women are not accepting or declining motherhood on the basis of whether or not an embryo has gills or a fetus has cute little toes.
There is no point in debating this issue. Let the opposition waste their energy and time making this argument.
What is really important is convincing enough women that Roe is in danger. To show why women must have this fear, contemplate this imaginary example. Say the dsdddTrump GOP had a group of supporters, mainly in Red states, who believed an alien invasion was coming, and the GOP had obligingly passed state trigger laws (which automatically go into effect upon alien arrival) to address this eventuality. These laws could designate barren and post-menopausal women as the future protein supply for the aliens, protecting everyone else.
Would this situation doom the Republicans. Of course not. Voters would simply say every party has its crazies. If they thought the Republicans were more likely to fix the potholes, or provide something else the electorate wanted, they would vote for them despite their alien nonsense.
Hopefully, we have finally reached to point where women take the possible demise of Roe seriously. Until that time, it will be difficult to fight the opposition, no matter how crazy their arguments.
