To be honest, most of Sinema’s backers (anonymous “Democrats” in a Business Insider article and Henry Olsen of The Washington Post) are full of shit and lies when it comes to the Arizona Democratic Party censuring her. The anonymous “Democrats” in AZ are worried that the Sinema controversy will hurt Mark Kelly’s reelection bid. Olsen does the usual false equivalency between Democrats and Republican “purity tests.” Main thing is that when you look at the list of groups, donors, and the other Democrats in AZ who have abandoned Sinema, it really is, as Josh Marshall says, the end of her political career.
And let just emphasize that last part. It’s really unheard of that a state Democratic Party censures a Democratic politician. And I was struck by some of the latest groups to pull support from Kyrsten Sinema over her killing voting rights. Voto Latino for one, and NARAL for another.
Voto Latino has had enough of Democratic Sen. Kyrsten Sinema and is pledging to spend “six figures” to get rid of her when she’s up for re-election in 2024.
The national grassroots political group is just the latest to pile up against Sinema, who has been formally censured by the Arizona Democratic Party’s executive committee over her support of the filibuster.
“The people of Arizona deserve a Senator willing to fight for democracy and protect the sanctity of every Americans’ vote,’’ Voto Latino’s Maria Teresa Kumar said, who announced the ¡Adios Sinema! campaign this week.
Kumar points out that there may be an estimated +160,000 more Latino voters in AZ by 2024. And given that AZ is now ground zero for voter suppression, giving the middle finger to voters rights might not go over well with Latino voters. But as Joan Walsh pointed out, Sinema is a classic narcissist who believes that she will live the good life with all the money she is receiving from financial services and pharmaceutical industries, so what does she care?
This is true, but it also means that Sinema made more political enemies from the ranks of her former supporters. And I agree that Sinema doesn’t care, but it doesn’t change the fact that her political career is over. Sinema will rake in money from those who hate the progressive agenda, but they will switch their financial support to a Republican when election time comes.
But I was also struck by NARAL’s actions. If I recall correctly, many progressives have been upset with NARAL not withdrawing support from Republican candidates who only give lip service to abortion rights. The excuse from NARAL has always been that they were trying to have “access” to those Republicans. But the likes of Susan Collins kept supporting judges who ended up curtailing abortion rights. And now we have a SCOTUS that will kill abortion rights this year.
It appears that NARAL has finally seen the light that all their money and support didn’t give them shit with Republicans. And maybe they realize whatever everyone else has with regards to Sinema? Sinema is a corrupt politician who does not believe in voting and abortion rights. When abortion rights goes bye bye this summer, Sinema and Manchin will be there to continue to support the Senate filibuster, which means no national law to protect abortion rights.
But it appears that Sinema still has some “supporters.”
For starters, we have the typical anonymous “Democrat” who frets that Democrats holding a so called Democratic politician accountable is just bad.
Arizona Democrats are growing increasingly alarmed that the drama surrounding Sen. Kyrsten Sinema will make it harder for her counterpart, Sen. Mark Kelly, to win re-election in November.
It's an unintended side effect stemming from the intra-party outrage that Sinema kicked up after her decision last week to block a major voting rights bill that sits atop President Joe Biden's legislative agenda.
Now, Sinema is the talk of Grand Canyon State politics when Democrats very much would rather the focus be on Kelly, a former astronaut running in a tough 2022 midterm cycle where Republicans need to pick up just one Senate seat to win back the majority.
"I do think that Kyrsten Sinema is making it significantly more difficult for Mark Kelly to get re-elected," said one Arizona Democratic Party official, who requested anonymity to speak bluntly about the race.
"This is not what we wanted to talk about right now," the official said. "It's like a vacuum that's taking away from the focus that needs to be on Mark Kelly right now … instead we're fighting against ourselves here."
Um, it is Sinema who is responsible for any “intra-party outrage.” She’s a narcissist. Try ignoring her when she blocks voting rights, and it just insults the intelligence of Democratic voters. And frankly, I do not think Democratic and independent voters are going to punish Kelly because he has made his stance clear. Kelly is for protecting voting rights, not for a Senate “tradition” that allows the tyranny of the minority.
Sinema may have a D by her name, but she is no Democrat.
And to prove this, we have Henry Olsen of The Washington Post claiming that Democrats are using a “purity test” on poor Kyrsten Sinema. By the way, Olsen is a Republican who is using false equivalency to make his point. I cannot link to his trolling article, but Democrats have NOTHING to compare to the purity tests of the modern Republican Party. Republicans went on a censure and rebukepalooza after Trump’s second impeachment.
ADP censures a corrupt politician who refuses to protect voting rights, but Republicans censure and rebuke Republican politicians who voted to impeachment Trump over the Jan 6th insurrection. What do these two things have in common? Trump tried to overthrow an election and the government through violence, but Republicans who found him guilty are to be censured and rebuked. Arizona Democrats want to make sure they can vote and that their votes will count, but Sinema agrees with Republicans that Democrats shouldn’t get to vote.
Oh the horrors!
If this is the best that Sinema backers and bedwetting Democrats can come up with to defend Sinema, they are as delusional and corrupt as she is.
