We may be teetering on the brink of conflict in Ukraine. Covid continues to devastate families and communities. The Former Guy floats pardoning Insurrectionists and makes clear what we all know, that he was trying to overturn legitimate election results. Spotify is on our collective naughty list for lots of reasons, and many are grieving Wordle’s becoming part of the New York Times. And yes, we had a recordbreaking snowstorm this weekend.
NONE of that is taking up front-burner space in my thoughts these days. What is, you ask?
Some of you may remember that not so long ago, Casa Brillig had two dogs. In the photo on the right is our elder Plottie mix and our younger Redbone Coonhound mix. Both were rescues from local shelters, and while they came to us four years apart they were as close as two pups could be.
And then in November 2019, our beloved Snicker went to Rainbow Bridge. We were devastated, and couldn’t bear to bring another dog into the house immediately. K2 especially, as Snicker was ‘his’ dog and he missed her more than any of us realized.
When Vorpal turned 13 last July, we began thinking about adding another dog to our household, but it took a while for all of us to really, truly be on board. I started looking at local shelter websites, and learned that in these Pandemic Times, you cannot simply show up and look at available animals; you have to contact them about animals you see on the website, and if you’re a match you’ll get to make an appointment to come see them in person.
Because we already had Vorpal at home, many amazing and Very Good Dogs were not options for us because those pupdogs needed to be only pets. So I kept looking, and then… last Tuesday… I saw that the shelter both Vorpal and my namesake Brillig came from had several litters of puppies available. I showed the pictures to Mr. Brillig, who said “Contact them!” I did, and ten minutes later had an email with a link to sign up for an appointment. Wednesday afternoon we arrived at the shelter with Vorpal (who, as elder and current dog, needed to be OK with any pup we brought home). We met two of the puppies in one of the litters, and an hour later were on our way home.
Please allow me to introduce the newest member of Casa Brillig, Simba:
He’s a (now) 12wk Boxer mix pup, and I already know what you’re thinking: LOOK AT THOSE PAWS!!!!! We’re not sure how big he’ll be because no one knows what breed Dad was, but we’re expecting at least 60-70lbs. He’s smart, curious, and we now remember just how much work puppies are! He’s totally mesmerized us.
I implore you to consider rescuing a shelter animal when looking for your next animal companion. Every shelter pet needs a home, and our four pups have been the best dogs we could ever have hoped to have.
Don’t fall prey to what I saw in a recent social media posting eagerly sharing the ‘availability’ of a litter from a ‘Quality Breeder’. They were a “goldendoodle/pyredoodle” hybrid. In other words, Mom was a golden/poodle mutt (the breeder called her a “Full Standard Goldendoodle”) and Dad was a Great Pyrenees/goldendoodle mutt. And these pups, no different from any rescue pup at your local animal shelter, were available for the low, low price of… $2300 each, if they cost the same as the Cavachons ALSO bred by these people.
Please accept a few more photos of Simba and Vorpal in lieu of eloquent political commentary, then wander across the story break for tonight’s Top Comments, Mojo and Pictures!
