CIRCLE, a non-partisan, independent research organization focused on youth civic engagement in the United States, determined the top 10 Senate contests this year in which young voters can have a decisive impact on the race: In order of impact, they are GA, AZ, NV, PA, WI, NH, NC, CO, FL and OH.
- Voter registration is closed in GA, AZ, FL and OH.
- PA registration closes on October 24, 2022.
- WI has in-person registration through November 4, 2022.*
- NV has in person registration through election day.
- NH has in-person election-day-only registration.
- NC permits in-person registration at Early Voting sites (Oct. 20-Nov. 5)
- For CO, see this link: Register to Vote
Based on this, there is substantial time for voters to register in more than half of the states with the highest Senate youth electoral significance.
Another non-partisan group, The Civics Center, focuses on registration of high school students — both 18-year-olds and pre-registration of 16-17 year-olds where permitted. In a study released last week The Civics Center found a 30+% Increase in Voter Registration for 18-Year-Olds in Greater Philadelphia Area in Just One Month. It also found:
-
During the four weeks studied, the number of the youngest potential voters who are registered in the greater Philadelphia area increased by more than 3,700 and by more than 7,500 since July 11, 2022.
-
While youth registration rates are increasing, there remains a great opportunity for more growth. Only three counties in the greater Philadelphia area achieved rates of 30% or above, and none have reached 35% registration for youth who will be 18 on Election Day.
These findings support the work done by Tom Bonier on youth registration nationally:
Bonier also noted a surge in women’s registration in PA:
Forget the media crap about polls and prompters. None of that matters if we put tremendous effort into registration of young voters and women voters, where possible everywhere, but especially in PA in the next eight days.
WHERE? How about high school and colleges?
So what can you do?
1. If you have any contacts in PA, especially with any PA high school or college student or that person’s family or friends, send this by text/DM/Email, or call them:
"Voter registration closes in Pennsylvania in EIGHT DAYS, on October 24. Please check your registration or register to vote ASAP. TurboVote makes it easy for you.
2. Fill out or circulate this form from TurnUp.US to receive info on conducting a HS or college registration drive — still possible in the next week.
3. Commit to Vote with Civic Influencers’ Motivate.US App
4. Take action with NextGen, which great programs for calling, texting or using social media
Please put any other suggestion in the comments.
*In WI, October 19, 2022 is the date by which voters must register on-line or have mail ballots postmarked.
