This past week, the Jan 6 Committee of the United States House of Representatives held its last scheduled hearing in its wide-ranging investigation of the insurrection by MAGA fanatics that took place on the Capitol grounds in Washington, DC on January 6, 2021.
Following the committee’s decision and historic vote this past Thursday to subpoena Donald Trump, the nation’s editorial cartoonists were in high gear and closely following every political move. The result was that more editorial cartoons were published than I’ve seen in any one-week period in recent memory.
Part 1: I’m going to limit the diary to show how Trump was portrayed by the cartoonists, how his actions were interpreted prior to and after the insurrection, and the predictably indifferent reaction of the GOP and its hordes of MAGA supporters. This diary includes almost 40 editorial cartoons and other relevant Tweets and images. I have already posted 23 additional cartoons in the comments section.
Part 2: The diary has around 25 cartoons and Tweets including a famous JFK/LBJ campaign appearance in Texas. Topics include early voting, the disaster that is Herschel Walker as the GOP’s US Senate nominee in Georgia, the Russia-Ukraine War, and protests in Iran. In the comments section, among other issues of interest, I have posted another 25 cartoons on climate change, pot legalization, women’s rights, the DeSantis shenanigans in Floriduh, and other issues.
Hope you enjoy reading it. Thanks.

LBJ Angrily Admonishing Nixon-Loving Pilots to Turn Their Engines Off
Here is the back story on this photograph. As usual, Richard Nixon and his Republican cronies were engaged in dirty political tricks.
The photo has frequently — and incorrectly — been described as Johnson shouting back at a heckler. What it actually depicts is Johnson yelling at pilots of nearby planes to cut their engines so that Kennedy could speak. Also, the photo sometimes appears online with Lady Bird Johnson cropped out, putting the focus squarely on LBJ's legendary temper.
There is some debate as to whether the pilots' actions were intentional. The Johnson biography on the U.S. Senate web site describes it this way:
(Johnson) also pressed for a joint appearance of the Democratic candidates somewhere in Texas. They arranged the meeting at the airport in Amarillo, where campaign advance men stopped all air traffic during the brief ceremonies so that the candidates could address the crowd. But they had not counted on the Republican-leaning airline pilots, who deliberately ran the engines of their planes in order to drown out the speakers. At the close of the ruined appearance, a photographer snapped a concerned Kennedy placing his hands on Johnson's shoulder, trying to calm his angry, gesticulating running mate.
Kennedy made light of the noise during his speech, quipping "That is Dick coming in" (Richard Nixon was also campaigning in Texas that day) and "They can't stop the truth anyway. I don't care how much that engine warms up."
The picture was taken by Richard Pipes (who passed away in 2015), a photographer for the Amarillo Globe-News, who described the scene as "a noisy mess."
GA-Sen: Religion is the Last Refuge of a Right-Wing Scoundrel
It’s My Private Business
New York Times: “The Senate race in Georgia has become an explicit matchup of two increasingly divergent versions of American Christianity. Walker reflects the way conservative Christianity continues to be defined by its fusion with right-wing politics and tolerance for candidates who, whatever their personal failings or flaws, advance its power and cause.”
“Mr. Walker has wielded his Christianity as an ultimate defense, at once denying the abortion allegations are true while also pointing to the mercy and forgiveness in Jesus as a divine backstop.”

Turmoil in Iran
“Three weeks after antigovernment protests erupted across Iran — sparked by the death of a woman detained for allegedly violating the country’s strict Islamic dress code — the movement has proved more durable than previous challenges to Tehran’s leaders and could pose a continuing threat,” the Wall Street Journal reports.
“Students across the country rallied outside universities on Sunday, chanting slogans including ‘death to the dictator,’ and schoolgirls marched in the streets of Tehran waving their veils in the air, a gesture that has become a central expression of dissent. The governor of Kurdistan province on Sunday ordered universities closed, likely to avoid more protests. Stores across the country stayed closed as part of a widening strike of shopkeepers.”
“The demonstrations are unlikely to topple the government, at least in the short term, activists and political analysts said. But the deep disaffection they represent and the fact that they target a key pillar of the Islamic Republic and its foundational ideology make them a significant test.”
