The attack on Paul Pelosi, husband to Congressional House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi, was without question heinous. But what’s been more heinous is the reaction by those in the GOP and their Conservative fanatics.
Instead of simply releasing statements on how horrible the crime was and that political violence is just plain wrong, these dirtbags either added a big “But…”to their condolences, like Virginia Governor Glen Yungkin, downplayed it to just being a random crime, in order to play up the issue of rising crime, like Fox News’ Brian Kilmeade, or joked about it like Arizona gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake. Some Republicans floated unfounded conspiracy theories, saying the attack was some gay tryst gone wrong.
So what do these kinds of reactions tell me? It tells me Republicans are not above political violence in their own country, or against their fellow citizens. It tells me Republicans now see people who have a political difference as simply the enemy. And when you can see a human being as just the enemy — well you can justify doing anything to them or mistreat them in any sort of way. It’s okay. They’re the enemy. This mindset shift comes to the Republican Party all in a quest for pure unequaled power.
Malcolm Nance said it best. “They want to kill Americans.” That’s right. They want to kill us. At the very least, they want to subjugate us.
In Wisconsin, a gubernatorial candidate during a public speech, promised that if he won, a Democrat would never win another election in the state. The partisan crowd roared their approval. That’s some banana republic-type shit right there.
And what if we oppose or resist this undemocratic takeover? Sectarian violence is coming to America. We can’t wish this away. The best thing we can do is acknowledge it is coming and be prepared for it, both with security and laws. I don’t think it will result in an all-out civil war, because our political/philosophical divide is no longer geographical like it was in the 1860’s. In every state, there are liberals and conservatives. In big blue California, there are conservatives. In cherry red Alabama, there are liberals. But never say never.
So what can we do in the face of such undemocratic illiberal-ism? If a few Republican attorney generals attempt to decertify an election, individual states must be prepared to either secede (Yup, I said it!) or fight. If we don’t keep the election deniers out of the halls of power, then it will come to the nightmare scenario.
This was the plan of White supremacists the entire time: worm their way back into power by manipulating a political party into becoming illiberal and undemocratic. By its very nature, White supremacy is undemocratic. Once upon a time, it was the Democrats who housed and gave succor to White supremacy. These days it has metastasized within the Republican Party. Cancer can pop up anywhere and at anytime. So we the people must become the oncology surgeon and cut it out or the body politic will die.
