Linking this article on a concerted effort across Murdoch’s publications to dump Trump. I think Murdoch is thinking Trump is the problem, not what he stands for.
My immediate reaction is that Trump is the biggest loser, but Trumpism is running a close second. Yes, we are all sick and tired of Trump because he is an incredibly annoying person. He comes from a long line of annoying people right-wingers adore, but whose appeal is a mystery to me absent an under-developed respect for humanity: Rush Limbaugh, Dennis Miller post-SNL, Ron DeSantis, etc. But I’ve never voted against anyone just because they were annoying or lacked humor.
Trumpism got the blue vote out because of what it is:
- A violent, fascist movement aimed at destroying the United States as a democracy, especially as it presents in the Big Lie/election denialism.
- A movement focused on stripping the rights of women, minorities, and LGBTQ to satisfy its core constituencies tastes for cruelty (and as an exercise in power)
- A relentless tool for fear mongering and pandering to a victimhood mentality
- A movement that seems to lack in actual solutions short of tax cuts and cutting social programs
The Dobbs decision was huge I’m sure, but I think it was the whole of Trumpism that got pushed back on — despite inflation and the economy.
I’m keeping my fingers crossed on the Senate right now, but this election could have been so much worse.
Thanks everyone for getting out the vote!
