This morning, I read Inside the Billionaire-Backed ‘Hub for Election Denial’, describing how right wing megadonors the Uihleins have not only been spending tens of millions of dollars funding election deniers, but are partnering with one by hiring Arizona Republican Gina Swoboda as Executive Director of their nonprofit dark money group, Restoration Action Inc., which largely focuses on bogus “election integrity” campaigns, including her current effort to challenge Kari Lake’s loss for AZ Governor.
Overwhelming Republican financial support by billionaires is just one of the ways Democrats must overcome steep odds every election. Here are eight:
1. Grotesque under-representation in the Senate, where Democrats representing 40 million more people have only 50-51% of the Senior Chamber.
2. House gerrymandering, sanctioned by the US Supreme Court and (this year) NY’s highest Court.
3. Right Wing media dominance through Fox, 1,000 Rush-heirs et al.
4. MSM complicity and passivity in countering and correcting No. 3.
5. Lack of a Dem counterpart to the right wing media barrage (MSNBC ain’t it)
6. Post- Citizens United obscene spending by, e.g., the Uileins, Mercers, Kochs, Mellons et al.
7. Voter suppression, as for example in FL arrests of ex-felons.
8. Of course, the electoral college.
Shortly after the election I wrote a Twitter thread detailing these factors:
As I wrote last week, we stopped fascism without even having to time travel to kill Baby Hitler.
And for the next week, we have to continue doing it for Sen. Warnock in GA.
And after that, for the next two years. And especially for young voters, with these and other groups:
Note: For the poll, I omitted the Electoral College, because I think that’s the biggest in light of it determining both 2000 and 2016.
