The numbers are in from yesterday and they are astounding. Over 322,000 people voted yesterday in Georgia! This shatters the previous record of 233,000 for a single day of early voting. Over 24,000 people voted in person or by mail yesterday in DeKalb County alone. In Fulton County, about 27,000 people voted in person or by mail yesterday. Currently, the Atlanta area counties of Cobb, Fulton, Dekalb, and Gwinnett account for over 43% of total votes cast in the runoff, but they account for just 33% of Georgia’s population as a whole. Part of this is because those counties had a big head start over most of the other counties in terms of early voting. We shall see how the numbers end up at the end of the early voting period on Friday.
As of now, just over 504,000 people have voted in the runoff. Georgia could be on pace to see about 1.8 million people vote early, which would be very impressive given the compressed timetable this time around. According to NBC News, about 2.5 million people voted in person or by mail prior to the general election on November 8.
Monday was the first day during the current early voting window in which all of Georgia’s 159 counties were allowing early in-person voting and turnout was sky high everywhere.
The current demographic makeup of the 504,000 people who have voted early is about 48% white and 38% African American. Around the same juncture during the general election, the demographic makeup was about 57% white and 32% African American. It will be interesting to see what the demographic figures look like at the end of the week.
As of now, there are 20,425 people who have voted in the runoff who didn’t vote in the general. Of these, 63% are non-white and just shy of 50% fall into the youngest age category of 18-29. I would say that the numbers look very good for Warnock as of now, but there’s still a lot of time left. I will be able to make more accurate comparisons to November 8 when this early voting window closes on Friday evening. More news tomorrow!
