The Wall Street Journal offers some more details:
Neal said his next step would be to meet with Democrats on the Ways and Means Committee to discuss the issue and get legal advice. He wouldn’t say whether he intended to release any of the documents or portions of them publicly; that would require a vote by the full committee.
…
Under the tax code, the Ways and Means chairman can request any tax return from the IRS, and the law says the administration shall hand those over. But when the Treasury Department was under the control of the Trump administration in 2019, the agency refused to comply with Mr. Neal’s request for the president’s tax returns.
…
Even after Democrats lose control of the House, they will still control the Senate. The Finance Committee chairman, Sen. Ron Wyden (D., Ore.), has the same authority as Mr. Neal to request returns. He hasn’t said what he plans to do.
CNN is reporting that the Ways and Means Committee has received 6 years of twice-impeached former president Trump’s tax returns.
The Treasury Department has complied with last week’s court order to hand over the documents, a spokesperson from the Treasury Department confirmed to CNN on Wednesday.
The Supreme Court declined last week to intervene after courts said the House had power to request the returns from the IRS.
The committee, led by Democrat Richard Neal, had sought six years of Trump’s tax records, primarily from the time he served as president. That included records about both Trump personally and several of his corporate entities.
This could go a long way into investigations regarding tax and insurance fraud, and other matters.
These are records sought by the committee for purposes of investigation regarding possible changes to the relevant tax laws, not necessarily investigations into potential criminal activity. As such, they are private records that will likely be used by the committee and not released to the public.
The records were provided by the Internal Revenue Service following years of DT’s attempt to slow or prevent the release.
