Far-right Republican Rep. Ted Budd has won the race to succeed retiring Republican North Carolina Sen. Richard Burr. Budd defeats Cheri Beasley, a former state supreme court chief justice.
Budd’s victory in the Republican primary came in large part thanks to an endorsement from Donald Trump and $11 million in primary expenditures from the Club for Growth. As Trump’s endorsement suggests, Budd tried to block Congress from certifying the 2020 election and repeated Trump’s lies about that election. More recently, he refused to say whether he would accept the results of this election.
