This morning, Dr. Mutulu Shakur was released from prison on parole.
Dr. Shakur is a former Black Liberation Army member. In the last 1960s, Dr. Shakur was politically active and worked with the Revolutionary Army Movement.
Shakur was convicted of racketeering conspiracy charges alongside several Black liberationists and leftist allies for his involvement in the 1981 robbery of an armored truck. During the robbery, a security guard and two police officers were killed.
Dr. Shakur and his crew stole $1.6 million in cash from a Brink's armored car at the Nanuet Mall, in Nanuet, New York. During the robbery, Brink's guard, Peter Paige was killed, along with two Nyack police officers, Edward O'Grady and Waverly Brown. Security guard Joseph Trombino was seriously injured in the robbery. Trombino recovered from the wounds he received in this incident, but was killed in 2001 in the September 11 attacks.
Dr. Shakur was also convicted of aiding the prison escape of Assata Shakur. Assata remains wanted by the FBI with a $2 million reward on her head. Assata Shakur is 75 years old.
Dr. Shakur is the stepfather of rapper Tupac Shakur. He was born in Baltimore and moved to Jamaica, Queens, New York when he was 7 with his mother and younger sister.
In June 2022, it was revealed that Dr. Shakur has terminal bone marrow cancer with only months to live.
