I chose to feature this project in part because, although the teacher has made the effort to thank each individual donor, her project — like so many never-before-funded teachers’ projects — has not received a donation since Giving Tuesday (November 29th).
PROJECT #1
Resources: Help me give my students a fun, engaging classroom for learning Math in 2nd Grade!
Economic need: Nearly all students from low‑income households and an Equity Focus school
Location: Brooks-Quinn Jones Elementary School, Nacogdoches, Texas
Total: $373.76
Still Needed: $163.76 Completed — thank you!
Project description by Ms. Krygsman: I want to create a positive, fun math classroom for my 2nd graders. Most of my students come from low-income, struggling families. They bring such joy to me coming to school every day wanting to learn! The Math games and manipulatives I have chosen will help the students learn much needed math facts in a fun, engaging way. The students have set goals to for learning their facts. I want my students to know that everyone can achieve their goals and expectations. I hope to use these materials to help them achieve their goal!
Donations of ANY size can make a BIG difference!
This is one of the requested games.
As belinda ridgewood explained last week, this never-before-funded teacher has engineering students at a Mississippi vo-tech high school who need technical calculators to do their work.
PROJECT #2
Resources: Help me give my students 13 calculators for problem solving in order to solve math related problems in Engineering class at the school.
Economic need: Nearly all students from low‑income households and an Equity Focus school
Location: Canton Career Center, Canton, Mississippi
Total: $529.47
Still Needed: $259.47 Wow, also COMPLETED! Happy holidays; see you next week!
Project description by Dr. Osho: My students need calculators to facilitate their learning, in Engineering class we undertake subjects that require mathematical calculations. These calculations are not such that can be done without calculator, to complete the task, they wait on each other to use the only calculator in class, sometimes i allow them to use the calculators on their phone for those who have one.
With calculators, each student will be able to undertake the mathematical calculations independently and build their interest to improve the calculator skills which will translate in high test scores.
The calculators will also help nurture my student's interest in math problems which usually arise in Engineering, Physics, and Math related problems.
Donations of ANY size can make a BIG difference!
This is the calculator model needed.
DonorsChoose has developed the designation Equity Focus Schools to describe some schools that submit projects. They meet two criteria: at least 50% of students are Black, Latinx, Native American, Pacific Islander, or multiracial, and at least 50% of students qualify for free or reduced price lunch, the standard measure for school economic need. You can read more at the link about their efforts to address the longstanding inequity in education.

Last week’s 1st featured project — We Deserve Relevant Engaging Books — was completed rather quickly after a flurry of activity from our readers helped it to attract more attention! Here’s the teacher’s thank-you note:
Thank you for this amazing gift this holiday season! My students have been asking for new books all school year, and I really hoped this would be funded so their dreams would come true! My students will enjoy these books, thanks to your great generosity. Thank you for your kindness!
With gratitude,
Ms. E
While trapped indoors with my family during the winter freeze on Friday, I gave belinda ridgewood a break from posting this series and put together today’s TIP. I’ll be spending Sunday morning with my family, though, so belinda ridgewood is planning to host during that time. I’ll be here a few hours late. Meanwhile, I hope everyone is safe and warm!
