The USA’s past with the hacktivist group Anonymous has been, to say the least, rocky. While President Joe Biden has been adamant about not allowing Russian President Vladimir Putin to advance on his invasion of Ukraine, there has seemingly been little, to no movement on the American sidelines.
Anonymous has apparently taken a side in this current conflict, seeing as how at the time of writing this, the group have taken credit for over 300 attacks on Russian cyber targets. While the targets include the Russian gas system, the hackers also lay claim to taking over a TV station, while displaying Ukrainian front line fighting, as well as shutting down the main Russian government website; per Homeland Security.
In a flurry of events over the past few weeks, global citizens have panicked from near and far as the open-endedness of the future drew closer. Now we have our answer, and it is not pretty. Putin will not stop unless forced to do so. My only question is: Can Biden and allied forces work swiftly enough to stamp this out, stopping just short of WW III? And as we keep a close eye on #OpRussia from Anonymous, will their motto have an everlasting meaning on society as we know it? As they continue to remind us, “We Are Anonymous, We Are Legion. We Do Not Forgive, We Do Not Forget. Expect Us”. Only they can answer such queries, and let us hope they do.
