So We pull into this place, Swandini. Dan had reserved the place well ahead of our trip as he was very familiar with his home country.
It looked really clean and inviting after a long drive to get there. So, I take the key as Dan and Bill start to unpack the car. I opened the door that lead into the kitchen and there was movement/action that my eyes perceived but then saw nothing. Hmmmmm, I thought what was that. As Bill and Dan were bringing in suit cases, I informed them of something fishy. We may have roaches?
Immediately, both Bill and Dan scoffed and said, “Aw, who cares about a few roaches. We are all entomologists” Well, the place was well equipped and look clean. I thought to myself, “Ok, we shall see.” They didn’t see the mysterious movement.
After we unpacked, always we had a delicious braai outside under the stars and I noticed some ants near our feet but they didn’t bother us. Had steak, Boerewors and maybe some rice a salad.
As Bill and Dan relaxed with a Pimbi, I went to take a shower.
Ugh, I stepped into the shower and several little German cockroaches were staring at me high up on the shower wall. They were not clumped together but rather spread out on the tile, some of which was cracked. Yuck, ok they are small and just sitting there. I showered quickly and dressed. When I came out and told them about the roaches in the shower, again with the “Oh well, some little roaches.” Later, we called it a night and went to bed.
After some time asleep, I needed to go to the bathroom. I turned on the light on my side, as in an unfamiliar place you need to see where you are going. I threw the blanket off and sat up. There looking up at me was … a roach. Staring at me, not running away or doing something else. If there was one there, there would be more along the way, so I decided to hold my pee and pull the blanket over my head so the roaches didn’t crawl over my face while I slept.
Not long after than, there was a knock at the door. We opened it and Dan said, “Come here.” We followed him to his room. He pointed to the wall near his bed. There on the wall spread out were not a few little brown roaches, just living their lives. The look of disgust on Dan face was just awful. Then we laughed and said we are out of here tomorrow.
The very first thing next morning Bill and Dan did was make plans to go to the sister lodge the next night. And also that was a good thing because we were leaving a couple of bus loads of kids showed up. We were like, “See ya, We are out of here.” Did we complain about the roaches. Nope, just glad to be gone. Heading to the next place near the Blyd River Canyon.
This was many years ago, so this is reminiscing.
I looked up the place where we went and it looks like a lovely place to stay. I highly recommend visiting that area. It’s spectacular.
The University of Lethbridge had faxed some stuff to Bill there in considering him as president. It was hard to communicate with them being on the other side of the world.
