It’s nearly inconceivable the amount of time, energy, and money Donald Trump’s fans have poured into challenging the results of the 2020 election, simply because Trump couldn’t squeeze the words “I lost” out of the one orifice on his body that’s borderline capable of such elocution. Instead, he let his marginally less lucid end do the talking, and that’s led to all manner of woes for this country and its long-beleaguered, Drumpf-weary citizens.
By my reckoning, we’re now 15 months past Donald Trump’s defenestration, and his scurfy arse is still stuck inside the window frame—because some dead-enders simply can’t fathom how the most vulgar, venal, vicious, corrupt, and incompetent pr*sident ever to finish his tenure with negative overall job growth could have possibly lost an election to Joe Biden. (Yes, that’s really how they think.)
And now, because Arizona’s fraudit went so well for anti-Biden election truthers, Wisconsin is taking its own bite of the poison apple. And they’ve found the perfect person to help them. A convicted felon!
The Assembly Elections Committee plans to give a platform Wednesday to Peter Bernegger, who was convicted of bank fraud and mail fraud in 2009 for deceiving investors in two startup companies. Bernegger was released from federal prison in 2014.
Bernegger used Wisconsin's open records law last year to gather millions of copies of ballots so he and others could review them. In some cases, Bernegger and his helpers visited election officials in person to make copies of the ballots.
In a notice regarding Bernegger’s upcoming testimony, the Assembly Elections Committee listed him as a “data analyst”—though, according to the Journal Sentinel, as of 2016, this ne’er-do-well sausage scion “did not have a job and as of 2020, he had paid little of the $1.7 million in restitution he owed from his fraud case, according to court documents.”
When a reporter attempted to speak with Bernegger on Tuesday, he hung up after saying, “No thanks.”
Wednesday's committee hearing will give Bernegger his biggest megaphone yet to make his case the 2020 election was flawed. Recounts and court rulings have found Joe Biden beat Donald Trump in Wisconsin by 21,000 votes. A nonpartisan legislative audit and a review by the conservative Wisconsin Institute for Law & Liberty found no evidence of significant voter fraud.
Occam’s razor might tell you that there is no evidence of significant voter fraud, but such logic will do little to thwart this barmy army of Energizer bungholes. They think the election fraud evidence simply has to be out there. Somewhere. Can’t Georgia’s secretary of state simply pull 11,870 Trump votes out of his ass? Trump keeps TEN BILLION DOLLARS, a Michigan Man of the Year Award, and six U.S. Steel factories up his ass, so this should be a piece of cake by comparison.
Needless to say, Wisconsin Democrats are less than impressed with their rivals’ latest fishing expedition and are especially skeptical of the goober with the cane pole who’s helping state Republicans conduct it.
“Hearing from Peter Bernegger will only further confirm what we have known about the so-called experts that Republicans keep bringing in: we can’t trust them,” noted Democratic state Rep. Mark Spreitzer in a written statement. “The only expertise Mr. Bernegger has is in being convicted of fraud. He is the last person I would trust to do anything with Wisconsin’s elections.”
Well, no, the last person you’d trust is international tinfoil-hat supermodel Mike Lindell, who’s tangentially connected to this story through Douglas Frank, a crank mathematics professor who’s consulted with both Lindell and Bernegger, according to Nate Cain, a West Virginia consultant who’s working with former state Supreme Court Justice Michael Gableman on Wisconsin’s costly ($676,000!) deep dive into Donald Trump’s diseased mind. And in case Frank’s connection to Lindell isn’t enough to convince you of his overweening fondness for Cocoa Puffs, there’s this: Frank recently testified before the Wisconsin Assembly Elections Committee, where he claimed officials have no idea who voted in the 2020 presidential election. As the Journal Sentinel noted, however, “the names of voters are readily available from the state.”
Send in the clowns. And the cranks. And—sure, why not?—toss in a felon or two for good measure. Sooner or later, we’ll get to the bottom of this. We have to eventually, right? Right?
It made comedian Sarah Silverman say, “THIS IS FUCKING BRILLIANT,” and prompted author Stephen King to shout “Pulitzer Prize!!!” (on Twitter, that is). What is it?
