On May 26, 2002, when Daily Kos was born, kos wrote these seven sentences:
I am progressive. I am liberal. I make no apologies. I believe government has an obligation to create an even playing field for all of this country’s citizens and immigrants alike. I am not a socialist. I do not seek enforced equality. However, there has to be equality of opportunity, and the private sector, left to its own devices, will never achieve this goal.

That makes 2022 our 20th anniversary year, and we have a lot to celebrate!
What better way to mark this milestone than to ask community members to nominate and vote on memorable highlights and outstanding contributions of the last two decades?
It’s time to nominate, vote on, and award some Koscars!
The Koscars acknowledge and honor outstanding contributions to Daily Kos. The entire Daily Kos membership is “the Academy” whose votes decide the winners. They were awarded twice before in 2010 (for writing in 2009) and 2011 (for writing in 2010).
The 20th anniversary is the perfect time to bring them back and have them cover all writing in all years.
Beginning March 8, a story will be posted each Tuesday requesting nominations for a single category. One of the 10 categories will be featured each week for 10 weeks. You can nominate any writing that has ever been posted here, including series or features that are no longer running.
One megapoll containing the finalists in all 10 categories will be presented on Tuesday, May 17—then the voting begins!
And the Koscar goes to … two winners in each category on our 20th anniversary: Thursday, May 26, 2022!
Special prizes will be awarded to the victors, but the best prize of all is knowing how much your contributions to Daily Kos are appreciated by others. (Not to mention the bragging rights!)
As we count down to the anniversary over the next three months, be on the lookout for nostalgia posts from current and past staff and community members, as well as other surprise events during Anniversary Week.
Everyone will also have an opportunity to present their own individual "best of" lists, in case the categories below don't cover the writing you appreciate most.
Here's how you can participate in the Koscars fun!
-
Be on the lookout for the Koscars nomination request each week, posted as a story.
-
Read and rec it so it will stay visible on the trending list as long as possible.
-
Make nominations in each Koscars category. Don't be shy: You can even nominate yourself!
-
Vote on the final nominations starting Tuesday, May 17.
-
Congratulate the Koscar recipients on Thursday, May 26!
Foreign and domestic events being what they are, isn’t a lighthearted project like this a welcome distraction from talk of war, Supreme Court controversy, and general anxiety over the midterms? Let’s look back and celebrate the best of who we are, and the best of what we have to offer.
Koscar season has begun! Get the 20th anniversary party started and keep it going right up until May 26!
