I had plans for this diary but spring weather always gets the upper hand. So I will postpone my mushroom diary for a later date. Instead I’ll give you an early spring tour of my gardens.
I’ll begin with the white garden/hosta garden though there is no sign of hostas yet. There’s not much to look at besides pachysandra. We did manage to clean up the leaves.
I bought some hellebores and white columbine which I planted this week. There are daffodils and irises coming up.
Now onto the rock garden. Last fall my niece was selling stuff for a school fundraiser so we bought 60 bulbs for the rock garden. So far only the miniature irises are blooming.
And they're very pretty.
The Asian garden still needs a bit of work. I have plans to rework the area around the (covered) fish statue. I need to improve the drainage which I think is what's keeping the crocosmia from blooming. Also, you’ll see the green leaves poking up here and there. Those are Naked Ladies and I have them planted too deep which is keeping them from flowering.
Now on to the stumpery. The lungwort is leafing out and one is blooming.
I planted some primroses.
We refer to this next garden as King Krak because for about three years we had a large mound in the middle of it and my Polish friend said it looked like King Krak was buried there. It doesn’t make much sense now but the name stuck. Not much happening yet.
Here’s the wildflower meadow. If you look very closely you’ll see the rye nurse crop growing up through the straw. Once the meadow grows eight inches to a foot we’re supposed to mow it and keep it mown this whole season. It keeps any weeds from setting seed and allows the light to get to the perennial seeds. It’s still exciting for us to see the grass especially since we had black plastic down for so long.
The early daffodils are blooming along the front of the house.
These are items I brought back from my mom’s house after clearing it out last week. I joked that it looks like we’re opening a garden center. Lord knows where I’ll put all of it. This space will become the Bird-feeding Garden this year. I’ll probably write a diary about it with before and after pictures.
One last thing. I’m going to plug my friend’s book Shade Garden Flowers by Rose White because the cover photo is my hosta garden.
Well that’s all that’s happening in my gardens. What’s happening in yours?
