Another week has flown past and here I am starting up another little open thread and jotting down another—
Greetings!
Welcome to the yearly Good Friday edition of your weekly Werelynx update. A few photos from my week to kick off a bit of community.
Last weekend, Mrs the Werelynx, Fabulous Mother-In-Law and I were out in the country at the chalupa.
What’s a chalupa? In these parts, it’s an old Germanic style of farm house, now mostly used for recreation.
Wasn’t a great week for gardening, but I did plant a couple hundred onion bulbs.
Back in the big city, there was work waiting.
And there were cultural events to attend.
In our little apartment, I tried to keep my little seedling peppers in the sun.
They got a bit too much sun in the middle of the week and ended up getting their tiny leaves burned. Looks like most will survive and in the meantime, I’ve added some tiny eggplant seedlings. They came up in the four empty containers in the foreground.
When Mrs the Werelynx and I went grocery shopping together, I picked up two small packets of sweetcorn seeds.
Thinking about the garden.
Making plans.
In the picture above you can see the greater part of our garden. On the right of the post in the foreground you can see a couple clumps of rhubarb already opening their leaves. Behind them is a leafy brown/gray patch where the asparagus is hiding. surrounding that is a weedy strip of grass that I’ll be digging up this weekend. Beyond that there’s a lone clump of green in a wide area of bare ground. That’s some oniony thing— not sure exactly what. Fabulous Mother-In-Law brought it from work one day. We cut the green stalks and leave the bulbs, similar to chives, but larger. Behind the mystery onion thing is a row of bushy growth and a triangular raised planter box. The bushy growth is a line of black currant bushes and the box we installed last year.
I think along the fence I might plant the sweetcorn and some climbing beans. Might risk the corn already this weekend. Probably save the beans for late May. Ideally the beans would climb the corn— and provide a bit of nitrogen.
I’d like to finally establish a patch of thyme. I’ve not had much luck with it over the years— just a lemon scented variety seems to want to stick around and I have trouble inventing uses for it.
The big corner to the right and out of frame I want to grow pumpkins in this year.
And around that oniony clump— hmm, some lettuce, carrots, maybe Brussels sprouts, peas, kohlrabi. Oh, and beets. I didn’t have any beets last year. Maybe some bush beans?
The big question is, what’s going into the planter box? Maybe the peppers and eggplant if they survive. Oh, maybe zucchini, Mrs the Werelynx would be sad if we didn’t have any zucchini in the garden and I haven’t figured out a place for it yet.
I try not to plant the same plants in the same areas year after year.
This is going to be an extra long and busy weekend. Easter is here again, and we’ll be decorating a few eggs, baking a few treats and braiding a few switches to lash a few butts. Tradition! There’ll hopefully be more about that next week.
Thanks for stopping by.
