If the Supreme Court overturns Roe, and that appears to be the case, an early vote on how this decision will motivate voters will be Kansas on August 2nd.
The Kansas Supreme Court ruled that access to a safe abortion is in the Kansas Constitution.
The Kansas legislature, overwhelmingly Republican, has put a measure on the ballot in August to allow the legislature to ban abortions. From the article linked above.
The proposed amendment is on the Aug. 2 primary ballot, and the language of the proposed amendment is confusing. At first glance, the language seems to imply that, while women will lose their state constitutional right to abortion, there will be exceptions in cases of rape, incest or to save the life of the pregnant woman. However, for those reading closely, the proposed amendment actually gives politicians in Topeka the power to ban abortion in all cases, even in cases of rape, incest, or to save the life of the pregnant woman.
I live in Kansas City, Missouri less than a mile from Kansas. I regularly ride my bike into Johnson County, the richest county in Kansas and is the proto-typical suburban area that has become Democratic.
I’m beginning to signs supporting this amendment where I ride in Kansas. On Sunday, I saw a big sign on the fence of a Catholic Church. I pointed these signs out to my friends, who are all pro-choice and live in Kansas. They were not aware of them and what they mean. They will now.
This vote in Kansas in August will be a huge indicator about how motivated voters will be about outlawing abortion. Of course, the money spent by both sides should be astronomical because the results will be national news.
When the Court’s decision comes down, I’m sure there will be polling on this vote in August.
