On January 2, 2021, former president Donald J. Trump had an hour-long phone call with Georgia secretary of state, Brad Raffensperger. The Washington Post published a full transcript of the call a few days later.
Among numerous headline grabbing quotes from the former president is this well-known doozy:
“All I want to do is this. I just want to find 11,780 votes, which is one more than we have because we won the state.”
While much of Trump’s efforts on the call were aimed at pressuring Georgia election officials to add to his own vote totals, it’s important to note how the quote above is different (and under-reported).
In this instance, Trump wants to find 11,780 of BIDEN’s votes to disqualify. Read the quote again.
During the call, Trump alternately pressures Raffensperger to add to his vote total or lower Biden’s vote total. Both equally achieve Trump’s ends.
Fulton County district attorney, Fani Willis, who is investigating election interference in the 2020 election, has scheduled Raffensperger’s testimony on this matter next week. This distinction between adding votes and disqualifying votes needs more traction in national reporting.
