Following Mary Trump’s recommendation that we flood the IRS with these specific complaints about the NRA’s abuse of its non-profit, tax-exempt status, today, Memorial Day, I completed and submitted IRS form13909, as in the image, as it was originally shared.
The text of the Description of Activities (in case the image is too small) is: “Wayne LaPierre and the NRA have continually violated the Johnson Act of 1954 in that they exclusively and actively endorse Republican party candidates, support the Republican party candidates through significant donations, and provide a platform for Republican party candidates to gain publicity. Wayne LaPierre has also used funds generated from NRA fundraising for his own personal gain, including the financing of vacations for himself and for his family members.”
The NRA’s EIN is 53-0116130.
UPDATE May 31
To my great dismay, one of the Commenters, MarEng, today correctly pointed out that the NRA Foundation, Inc. is the 501 c 3 non-profit, tax-exempt charity, with different officers — not Wayne LaPierre.
The NRA itself is a 501 c 4 Social Welfare non-profit, tax-exempt organization, which IS allowed to conduct political activity, and is NOT covered under the Johnson Amendment. The completed 13909 form as I originally viewed it and subsequently shared here is wrong.
Any ideas? Clearly use of funds for personal use would be violations in either case. But what else can be said about the NRA that correctly shows it’s in violation of other 501 c 4 regs, OR what can be said about the NRA Foundation that correctly shows violations of 501 c 3 regs and the Johnson Amendment?
