After last weeks rulings I now realize something. Our nation is now run and controlled by six ultra right wing religious zealots/fanatics who were never elected and never voted for by regular citizens of this country. Most people do not even know who they are. If you asked a bunch of people out on the street to name some Supreme Court justices, most people probably couldn’t even name two of them. And yet, they practically run the country and have the power to strip millions of Americans of their hard earned rights.
Five of them were nominated by presidents who lost the popular vote. Three of them by a president who lost the popular vote twice-by millions of votes. This has made me realize just how totally screwed up our system of government is in this country. These un-elected fanatics have more power than anyone, including the President. In 2020 RBG died two months before an election, and as a result millions of women just lost their autonomy over their own bodies. If RBG had survived a couple more months, this would not have happened. The bad timing of an elderly lady’s death caused millions of women to lose their freedom and control over their own bodies. Now religious zealot governors in red states have control over their female constituents’ bodies. This is just insane.
Think about it — the Supreme Court is the most powerful body in our country. It is the highest power in the land. The people on it are supposed to be objective justices, but they are not. They are radical right wing politicians in robes, who’s goals are not to be fair judges but to force their corrupt political agenda down all our throats. They are politicians in robes, political hacks. They are theocrats who want to force their religious values on everyone, even people who do not subscribe to their religion.
They are never voted for by the people.
They are not subject to term limits.
They are never held accountable to the voters.
They are appointed for life and can never be voted out of office. No matter how awful or out of step they are, they can’t be voted out.
Representatives in the House of Representatives can be voted out every two years. They face the voters every two years. Senators face the voters every six years, most governors every four years. Presidents face the voters every four years.
All these other elected officials at least have to face the voters at some point. If the voters are unhappy with them, they can vote them out. But not SC justices. They can serve for decades and decades and never have to face the voters no matter how awful and out of step they are. It is crazy to have a person appointed to the court at age 41 for example, and then be able to serve for life. Someone could be appointed at 41 and live to be 90, serving on the court for 50 years. This is corrupt and ridiculous.
If Democrats had a filibuster proof majority in the Senate right now, maybe they could get progressive legislation passed, but it would not matter. The Supreme Court would just strike it down. They would claim it was “unconstitutional.” Not because it really was unconstitutional, but because they personally disagreed with it.
They want to destroy the rights of anyone who isn’t white, conservative, Christian and straight. They want to destroy the rights of women. They are coming for gay rights, civil rights, black peoples’ rights. They want to repeal the 20th century. They have NO respect for precedent. They have made that perfectly clear. They only want to pursue their political agenda of right wing theocracy.
Democrats must make reforming the SC a campaign issue and priority. They must make an issue of instituting term limits, maybe 18 years for SC members. The Vast majority of Americans would support term limits for SC members. If Democrats made this an issue this would help them gain some support.
Explain to the voters that we cannot let these fanatics have lifetime appointments. They must be limited to a certain number of years. The VAST majority of voters would respond favorably to proposals of term limits. It is absolutely insane to allow someone with so much power and who is never voted on by the public to serve for decades without being held accountable.
Term limits for SC justices would be a real winner with the voters if Dems would make this a priority.
