Five states are holding primaries tonight (though New York's primaries for U.S. House and state Senate won't take place until Aug. 23), while Mississippi and South Carolina are hosting runoffs for any races where no candidate took a majority in the first round of voting earlier this month. Additionally, Nebraska’s 1st Congressional District is conducting a special election.
We’ll be liveblogging the results here and also covering the returns closely on Twitter.

If you’re just getting settled in for the evening, welcome to continuing coverage of tonight’s multi-state primary elections. There have been a few surprises, a few close races, and some races that still stubbornly refuse to be put to bed. Here are some highlights:
- NE-01: This special election has proven to be considerably closer than practically anyone projected. With about 90% of the vote tallied, Republican Mike Flood only has a 52-48 lead over Democrat Patty Pansing Brooks. This is a race to replace the recently resigned veteran GOP Rep. Jeff Fortenberry, who did score a win of his own this week when he learned he would not be headed to jail for lying to the FBI.
- NY-Gov (R): In the second savage beatdown of a Giuliani this week, son Andrew Giuliani has gone down to defeat at the hands of Rep. Lee Zeldin, who has junior Rudy beat by around 20 points with roughly half the vote in. Zeldin now goes on to face Gov. Kathy Hochul, who easily won the Democratic primary.
- IL-Gov (R): While polling showed this one to be potentially close, it was most definitely not a close race. Darren Bailey wound up lapping the field, winning with 57% of the primary vote. He will have an uphill battle trying displace Gov. JB Pritzker (D), who is seeking his second term.
- IL-06 (D): In an incumbent-on-incumbent battle, Rep. Sean Casten has fairly easily dispatched first-term Rep. Connie Newman. With about 2/3 of the vote in, Casten has a 68-29 lead over Newman.
- IL-07 (D): This one is one of the surprises of the night. Veteran Rep. Danny Davis is struggling mightily with challenger Kina Collins. With about two-thirds of the vote in, Davis is clinging to a 52-46 lead.
- IL-15 (R): One would think saying the overturning of Roe was a victory for “white life” would doom a candidate. Not in the 2022 Republican party, m’friends. Rep. Mary Miller, who made that notorious utterance last weekend, cruised to a double-digit victory over fellow GOP incumbent Rodney Davis.
- CO-03 (R): Speaking of being incapable of being doomed in the 2022 GOP, Rep. Lauren Boebert was successfully renominated, and with relative ease, in this western Colorado district.
- MS-03/MS-04 (R): Two Republican Reps were forced into runoffs, and one of them bit the dust tonight. In southern Mississippi’s MS-04, Rep. Stephen Palazzo has gone down 54-46 to Mike Ezell. In neighboring MS-03, however, Michael Guest easily won his runoff.

OK-SEN-B (R): The AP just called the second half of this runoff for the open Senate seat in the Sooner State (Rep. Markwayne Mullin punched his ticket a few hours ago). As most expected, T.W. Shannon has claimed the second runoff position.

IL-17: The showdown in this light-blue (Biden +8) open seat is set, as the AP has called the Democratic primary for meteorologist Eric Sorenson. Sorenson will take on Republican Esther Joy King, who was the GOP nominee in 2020 and came very close to knocking off retiring Democratic Rep. Cheri Bustos.

IL-14: While there isn’t an AP call here yet, the November matchup in this slightly more Dem-friendly (Biden +12) seat is looking pretty firm. Kendall County board chairman Scott Gryder has a seven-point lead in that GOP primary. He’ll take on Rep. Lauren Underwood as she seeks a third term in which she will start as the betting favorite.

NE-01: The AP projects that the GOP will hold this seat, as Mike Flood has narrowly edged out Democrat Patty Pansing Brooks. This was a Trump +11 seat with only one reliably blue county (Lincoln’s Lancaster County), so the current margin (52-48) is a real eye-opener.

Where Are They Now: Old school SSP/DK Elections folks will remember the name Alexi Giannoulias. Giannoulias ran for the U.S. Senate in 2010 and lost narrowly to Republican Mark Kirk. Tonight, he made his return to elective politics by winning the Democratic nomination for Secretary of State.

As the clock strikes midnight on the East coast, we will put this edition of the Daily Kos Elections primary night coverage to bed. There are a small handful of uncalled races in Illinois, but they don’t appear close to resolution at this hour. We will have all the calls and winners during the day tomorrow. Thanks to David Jarman for taking the bulk of the coverage tonight, and thanks to you all for reading along. Good night!
