Me neither.
The sound we’re not hearing is the blathering of the usual looney/malevolent Republicans. Normally they’re out with nonsensical talking points within a few hours, but it’s now been a day since the blast heard round the world and we’ve heard from none of ‘em, AFAIK.
It’s the non-sound of fear and confusion. Fear of jail, fear of losing elections. They have no idea of what to do here, which way to turn. Whatever they do, they do in lockstep, and now we’re reaching the every-privileged-white-scheisskopf-for-himself phase. Lockstep is likely over — I’m sure that they’re trying like hell to come up with bullshit talking points which all of their leadership can buy into, but it ain’t working — hence the silence.
The best book title of all time is Everything Trump Touches Dies, by Rick Wilson. I believe that it’s now the Republican Party’s turn to die. Their party will necessarily split — some will peel off against Trump, some will cooperate to keep out of jail, and some will remain Trumpheads. This will be huge: the thing that Republicans have in their favor is unity, and now comes the disunity.
What could make this even better: if Trump’s not yet in jail or even if he is in jail, he’ll be running again for president. Then Republicans will face the fun decision of following the Trump-Over-Alles crowd, perhaps one-third of their party, or nominating someone who has a chance of winning a general election. I could see a steel-cage death match between Trump and, say, DeSantis — one will win, but both will be bloodied. And if they go with a candidate other than Trump, I could totally see Trump in the general anyway as a third-party candidate.
Thank you, Ms. Hutchinson! Thank you!
(Hopefully the Democratic Party can leverage this all for more than fundraising.)
