Welcome 🌻 to Friday’s Roundup of Good News!
Dr. Jill Biden is being featured in Harper’s Bazaar (Mattie Kahn).
“Even as a Senate spouse, I was working, going to grad school, doing campaign events, raising kids,” she remembers. The pace is intense but not new. “Showing up matters,” she explains. “That’s the feeling I get. You’re exhausted. You just do it.” It’s a mantra that helps explain how a person who has recently returned from back-to-back funerals to remember men who died from a disease that still haunts her seems as energized as ever.
I think we have all been exhausted by these past few years; these past few months; heck, even these past few days.
But she’s right. Showing up matters. Not giving up matters. Because we are making a difference. And showing up makes all the difference.
I’m sure most of us have had life experiences in which we didn’t want to bother. We were tired. We wanted to do something else.
But we’re the responsible group, so we showed up. And we found it made a difference. Planting those seeds. Sending a card. Going to a meeting.
Because the next step builds on the last. But that only happens when we show up. And just do it.
So often, when you take that first step, you can see the next. Or someone else gives you an idea. And you build something together.
Come on in, dear gnusies, and see who else is showing up.

No one here is naïve; we are aware of the many who are fighting to destroy our country. Some of us expected it: the cheating, the lying, the chaos, and yes, even the attempts to cling to power despite the clear will of the people. But we are here to read the efforts and the positive results of those (including us and our fellow gnus) who are working so hard to save our country from those very bad people. We are furious with them for what they are doing and we are letting them know. Remember:
💙 There are more of us than there are of them.
💛 They are terrified when we organize. THERE IS LOTS OF EVIDENCE THAT THEY ARE TERRIFIED!
💔 They want us to be demoralized. The best way to keep up your spirits is to fight. So, take the time to recharge your batteries, but find ways to contribute to the well-being of our country and our world.

Some Russian soldiers don’t want to go to the front line Yahoo News. Note, take with a grain of salt; the fog of war is always very foggy. And Ukraine has good reason to want to promote this. On the other hand if it’s true, it’s fascinating.
On Tuesday, Ukraine's Security Services published audio it said was from an intercepted call describing the situation.
The call, said to be made by a soldier calling his wife, described a unit in Donetsk getting into a standoff with Gen. Valeriy Solodchuk, the commander of the 36th Army, after he ordered them to fight.
Almost all the remaining 215 troops in the 600-person battalion refused to follow Solodchuk's instructions, the soldier is heard saying, even though their contracts with the Russian military obliged them to follow orders.
"Almost all of our battery refused," the man said in the recording. He added that Solodchuk started waving his gun and shooting, and that he said, "I'll whack you if you don't fucking go there!"
"Then, a kid says to him, 'Go ahead, whack!' Fuck, he pulled out a grenade, pulled a pin and says: 'Come on, shoot me! We'll blow up together.' That's it. The special forces guys also started pointing their guns at us. So, we pointed our guns at them."
On the other hand, there may be more of this going on than we know about Kelsey Vlamis, Yahoo News
Hundreds of Russian soldiers have refused to fight or fled their posts since the war in Ukraine began, according to report published Wednesday by The Wall Street Journal.
"So many people don't want to fight," Russian lawyer Mikhail Benyash told the outlet. Benyash is representing a dozen service members of Russia's National Guard, which typically stamps out protests in Russia, who were dismissed after refusing to take part in the invasion of Ukraine.
Isn’t it weird? It turns out that Russian soldiers are less of a death cult than Republicans.
South Dakota’s AG not gonna run for office again because he killed a guy Austin Gross Dakota News Now
PIERRE, S.D. - South Dakota Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg will not run for re-election in 2022, regardless of the outcome of his Senate impeachment trial. ✂️
Ravnsborg’s tenure as Attorney General has been marred by a September 2020 crash where he struck and killed pedestrian Joe Boever with his car near Highmore. He later pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges that did not find him criminally responsible for Boever’s death. The South Dakota House of Representatives impeached him in April over the incident and the events that followed.
Ravnsborg did not respond to a request for comment on the matter. However, sources close to the matter tell Dakota News Now that since being impeached in the House, Ravnsborg has been telling Republican delegates and close confidants that he will not run for the office again in 2022, regardless of the outcome of the Senate impeachment trial later this month.
I’ve been following this case for a while, and Ravnsborg was a real slimeball in the incident. He was happy to discover the man he killed was a Democrat.
Note: If these guys don’t show up, they don’t win.

Paul Ryan campaiging against Donald tRump Bob Brigham Raw Story
Ryan traveled to South Carolina to campaign for Rep. Tom Rice, the first candidate he has endorsed in the 2022 midterm elections, The Sun News in Myrtle Beach reported Wednesday.
Rice is being challenged by state Rep. Russell Fry after voting to impeach Trump for inciting the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.
When Trump endorsed Fry, he described Rice as "the coward who abandoned his constituents by caving to Nancy Pelosi and the Radical Left, and who actually voted against me on Impeachment Hoax #2." ✂️
“There were a lot of people who wanted to vote like Tom but who just didn’t have the guts to do it,” Ryan said. “There are a lot of people who say they’re going to vote their conscience, they’re going to vote for the Constitution, they’re going to vote for their convictions but when it gets hard to do that they don’t do it.”
Philadelphia senate race still close, chaotic Jeremy Roebuck The Philadelphia Inquirer
The Pennsylvania Commonwealth Court on Thursday ordered that roughly 800 undated mail ballots be included in the official tallies of Pennsylvania’s neck-and-neck GOP primary race.
But President Judge Renee Cohn Jubelirer ordered elections officials to keep track of how many there are.
The ruling — on ballots which arrived on time but were missing the required handwritten date on their outer envelopes — came as a result of a lawsuit candidate David McCormick filed last week.
“The absence of a handwritten date on the exterior envelope could be considered a ‘minor irregularity’ without a compelling reason that justifies the disenfranchisement of otherwise eligible voters,” Cohn Jubelirer wrote in her 40-page opinion.
Rs indignant that we think they don’t care about kids getting shot Liz Dye Wonkette
“How dare you. You think we don’t have hearts?” screeched Texas Congressman Louie Gohmert during this morning's House hearing on gun control.
In point of fact, we do think that. What other possible conclusion is there when an entire party refuses to take any action to keep Americans safe from being shot in their homes, churches, schools, hospitals, malls, and movie theaters? If your "family values" require children to go to school in a war zone so that you can amass a stockpile of cool murder sticks, then, yeah, you have no heart. Would a person with a functioning heart look at 19 dead kids and insist that it was more important for teenagers to be able to wander around with weapons of war strapped to their bodies than for kindergartners to be able to go to school without coming home in body bags? Not likely!
Yeah, I don’t give a *** about their fee-fees either.

From President Biden’s address on the problem of guns, especially assault rifles
For God’s sake, how much more carnage are we willing to accept? How many more innocent American lives must be taken before we say “enough”? Enough.
I know that we can’t prevent every tragedy. But here’s what I believe we have to do. Here’s what the overwhelming majority of the American people believe we must do. Here’s what the families in Buffalo and Uvalde, in Texas, told us we must do.
We need to ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. And if we can’t ban assault weapons, then we should raise the age to purchase them from 18 to 21. Strengthen background checks. Enact safe storage laws and red-flag laws. Repeal the immunity that protects gun manufacturers from liability. Address the mental health crisis deepening the trauma of gun violence and as a consequence of that violence.
These are rational, commonsense measures. And here’s what it all means. It all means this: We should reinstate the assault weapons ban and high-capacity magazines that we passed in 1994 with bipartisan support in Congress and the support of law enforcement. Nine categories of semi-automatic weapons were included in that ban, like AK-47s and AR-15s.
And in the 10 years it was law, mass shootings went down. But after Republicans let the law expire in 2004 and those weapons were allowed to be sold again, mass shootings tripled. Those are the facts.
A few years ago, the family of the inventor of the AR-15 said he would have been horrified to know that its design was being used to slaughter children and other innocent lives instead of being used as a military weapon on the battlefields, as it was designed — that’s what it was designed for.
Enough. Enough.
The Rs keep complaining that it shouldn’t be political. I agree. It should not be. They should stop making it that way. Only the crazies and the evils want to allow machine guns into schools.

Red states (!) making progress on clean energy Kathleen Yoder Grist
In 2019, renewable power was having a moment — but not where you’d expect. Arkansas, South Carolina, and Utah, among the reddest of red states, passed landmark legislation paving the way for expanding solar and wind power.
The bills these states enacted were all sponsored by Republicans, passed by Republican-controlled state legislatures, and approved by Republican governors. They were also bipartisan bills, getting support from Democrats, too.
Many Republican legislators still deny the scientific consensus around climate change and oppose policies to address the problem outright. But a recent study found that these red-state successes weren’t a fluke. The analysis, recently published in the journal Climatic Change, shows that states approved roughly 400 bills to reduce carbon emissions from 2015 to 2020. More than a quarter — 28 percent — passed through Republican-controlled legislatures.
Freedom and economics are the drivers, of course, not the climate crisis. But hey, that’s OK.
After the SCOTUS Roe leak, more than half the country is pro Roe. Oriana Gonzalez, Axios
Over half of Americans identify as "pro-choice," the highest recorded sentiment in support of abortion rights recorded by Gallup since 1995.
Driving the news: The Gallup poll also found that for the first time, a majority of Americans believe abortion is "morally acceptable."
By the numbers: The amount of "pro-choice" people increased from 49% in 2021 to 55% in 2022. The last time it reached a similar number was in 1995, when it stood at 56%.
- On the other hand, 39% identify as "pro-life," the lowest since 1996 (33%).
Note that Gallup, at least in my opinion, tends to be pro R, but even they are indicating a shift in the better direction. There’s also a bit in the article about how people disapprove of third trimester abortions. I’m sure everyone here knows (but it’s still worth repeating) that third trimester abortions usually only happen when something has gone terribly wrong.
Finland becomes first nation to make legally binding negative carbon pledge Olivia Rosane EcoWatch
Many countries have embraced a climate target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, but one country is taking it further.
Finland’s parliament passed a new Climate Change Act last week committing itself to achieving net-zero emissions by 2035 and negative emissions by 2040. While the timeline itself is notable, the act also makes Finland the first country to make a legally-binding climate negativity pledge, Protocol reported.
“High income countries have to take a progressive and active role when it comes to tackling climate change,” Finnish environment minister Emma Kari told Climate Home News.

🌱Grass roots. Biden and Harris can do the top-down stuff, but we have to support from the bottom. I don’t know how to deprogram 75 million people, but some things have been written about, such as deep canvassing, and lots of people are talking about this. If you know someone (who did not storm the Capitol), then see if you can be pleasant. Instead of trying to reason with them (logic is obviously not their strong point) distract them with something else. We need to remove the sources of lies and to take down the temperature. If we get more of the Rs to wear masks and to get vaccinated and to vote for Ds, the country will be a better place. We need to coax some of them out of the rabbit holes and diffuse the anger and the crazy.
🏃 Run for something. If you want to run for something, but have no idea what to do, these people will help you. They also like money and volunteers to help those people who are running, so even if you’re not in a position to stand for office, you can help. Note: they are especially planning to target the 57 Rs in local governments who participated in the insurrection.

Investigate the investigators FAILING Nicole Lafond Talking Points Memo
Just yesterday a federal jury essentially toppled ex-President Trump’s victimhood-laced line of attack against the Russia probe when it acquitted DNC-connected lawyer Michael Sussmann.
The acquittal was a significant swing and a miss, not just for special counsel John Durham, who was handpicked by then-Attorney General Bill Barr to look into the origins of the Trump-Russia probe, but for Trumpers everywhere who have built a brand off of the long-unsubstantiated belief that the Mueller probe was nothing more than a politically motivated conspiracy of the elites to undermine Trump’s legitimacy as president.
The acquittal was three years coming. Last year, the lawyer, Sussmann, was charged with lying to the FBI. The basis of the charges centered on a meeting that Sussmann held with an FBI official in 2016, when he shared information with the bureau about the Trump campaign and a Russian bank — information that has, in the years since, largely been debunked. Sussmann, according to Durham, allegedly claimed he shared the information as a private citizen, and not on behalf of a client.
That may not sound like a grand conspiracy, but Sussmann was useful for Durham, whose probe helped to build a loose case around MAGAland allegations that the 2016 Clinton campaign was the only entity to blame for the many investigations of the Trump campaign’s many ties to the Kremlin. (The Mueller report, of course, confirmed that Russia did interfere to help Trump win in 2016.)

From Harper’s Bazaar, Mattie Kahn
Joe Biden proposed to Jill five times. The two had been introduced in 1975 with an assist from Biden’s younger brother Frank. Then-senator Biden had seen her face on a one-off local parks-and-recreation ad campaign at the Wilmington airport and pointed her out when Frank came to pick him up: “That’s the kind of girl I’d like to date.” Frank knew her—they both attended the University of Delaware—and he gave Biden her number. The first time, the second time, the third time he proposed, she wasn’t sure. She couldn’t bear the prospect of a second divorce. And she wouldn’t do it to Beau and Hunter. The thought of becoming a senator’s wife terrified her. But after the fourth time, she felt herself softening. The fifth time, he told her he wouldn’t ask again. He was headed out on a trip to South Africa. He wanted an answer when he returned. The two married in 1977. “Your life will never change,” he promised.

New Zealand’s urban forests enjoying a native bird boom! Reasons to Be Cheerful
You might think that once a species is gone from a region it’s gone forever. Think again.
Last year, a titipounamu nest was found in a patch of urban forest just a few kilometers from parliament in Wellington, New Zealand. The return of the species, which had been missing from the city for more than 100 years, is due in part to Zealandia, an eco-sanctuary established in 1999 just 10 minutes from the urban core.
Zealandia’s success backs up new research that shows restoring urban forests is a vital first step to restoring native bird communities in cities, even those that have been absent for generations. Today, Wellington teems with birds once rarely seen, from the melodious tūī to the charismatic kākā. Since 2011, the number of native birds in the city has risen by 50 percent, and bird communities in the city’s parks are increasingly made up of mostly native species.

Trees save lives! Julia Kane, Grist
It’s hard not to love trees. They provide us with shade during the scorching heat of summer, help clean the air and water, and improve our physical and mental well-being. Now, a recent study has found that boosting urban greenery — including trees, shrubs, and other plants — could also save tens of thousands of lives in cities across the country.
For a study published earlier this month in Frontiers in Public Health, researchers looked at 35 metropolitan areas within the U.S. They compared satellite data showing changes in how much greenery a city had with mortality data for people aged 65 and older from 2000 to 2019. Using these measures, they estimated that even small increases in greenery could have saved over 34,000 lives over the past two decades.
“One of the primary questions that urban planners ask is where should they implement greening, and can we quantify the impact of greening initiatives for them — because there is a cost for tree planting campaigns or shrubbery planting,” Kevin Lane, an assistant professor of environmental health at Boston University, told the School of Public Health’s news service.
