The best antidote for hot takes is hard data, and the latest Daily Kos/Civiqs poll is here with your cure. This survey of 1,316 registered voters was conducted online from June 4-7 and reveals that 83% of Americans consider gun violence to be a national problem (67% a big problem, 16% a small problem). A remarkable, bipartisan 86% of Americans support universal background checks for anyone who wants to buy a gun (72% strongly, 14% somewhat). Further, 52% of Americans support a national assault weapons ban (45% strongly, 7% somewhat).
Other noteworthy findings in this month’s poll include:
- Even a majority of Republicans (75%) and 82% of frequent Fox News watchers support universal background checks for anyone who wants to buy a gun.
- Most Americans (61%) believe that gun purchasers should be 21 or older (39% 21 years old, 17% 25 years old, 5% older than 25).
- Codifying the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision into federal law remains a highly partisan issue: 75% of Democrats support such a law, while 71% of Republicans oppose it.
Additional issues surveyed include views on President Biden, perception of the U.S. Supreme Court, and viewership of Fox News, Newsmax, One America News Network, and MSNBC.
This poll’s results highlight Americans’ ardent support for gun safety measures like universal background checks.
