Politico article offers a preview of what will happen if the Republicans win control of the House of Representatives:
Republicans know they're legislatively limited even if they take the majority next year. So they plan to focus on inquiries into the border, Afghanistan, baby formula and more.
The Republicans are salivating at the prospect of demonizing Hunter Biden as if a majority of Americans really care what the son of the president did or didn’t do.
They hope to run so many other investigations into things few people actually care about that I doubt many people will bother paying attention to them. The only actual significant action they can take will be shutting down the Jan. 6th committee. What they can’t control for the remainder of President Biden’s term is what Merrick Garland and the Justice Department does, nor can they control what New York State and Georgia does with their investigations.
If the GOP wins a majority in the Senate I assume we’ll see similar investigative committees.
If some of the wacca-toony Senate candidates like Hershel Walker (watch videos) who makes Marjorie Taylor Greene look like a model of sanity, wins we can expect performances that even Fox News won’t be able to resist airing. The GOP will become the Sideshow Bob and Krusty the Clown party.
I expect President Biden will do his best to use his Executive Power to advance his, and our, agenda. He actually has real power while the Congress only has the power to investigate and any legislation they pass can be vetoed by the president unless they have a veto proof 2/3rds majority which is highly unlikely to happen.
What we can expect in the worst case of two GOP congressional wins is that the final two years of Biden’s term will position the Republican Party on the precipice of becoming a permanent minority party despite every attempt to gerrymander themselves into election wins in House races and disenfranchise voters in national and local elections.
I think there is a point where enough voters see the party for what it is, a cruel con job that they fell for, to prompt voters who never voted for a Democrat to look at the alternative candidate from the GOP as too wacky to vote for. It is exceedingly difficult for anyone to admit they were taken in by a con artist but the more people who admit this the more acceptable it becomes psychologically to say “I fell for it too.”
Once someone does this they might say “I held my nose and voted for the Democrat.” In order for this scenario to play out it behoves the Democrats to nominate moderate candidates in states and districts that have previously been strongly Republican.
By the next presidential election it is quite possible that the Democrats will not only win the presidency against one of the current front runners, Trump and DeSantis, who insist on running on the fighting culture wars and spewing a tapestry of lies, but also sweep the House and Senate. If this happens the Republicans will become a minority party for as long as it takes for them to regain their sanity. That could be many years. They’d have to become the party of Reagan, Rockefeller, and even Nixon to stand a chance of regaining power again.
