Dear Attorney General Merrick Garland,
I am writing you for the second time regarding the crimes of Donald J. Trump and his cohort/s. I fear for our democracy if Trump is not indicted for his attempt/s to 'steal' democracy. While I could never have supported him, this is not a political plea and should never be interpreted as such. It is clear to any thinking person that Trump wanted to install himself as an autocrat. This would have ended our democratic experiment. Furthermore, it is clear that he is undeterred. While he is no intellect, neither is he stupid. He is crazy like a fox. Even now, he is trying to get electors decertified?? How can that even be a thing 18 months later? Why don't we have a system which protects us against such absurdities?
As I said in my earlier letter to you, even if he is not convicted, he must be charged. Not to charge him, when people from across the spectrum of political beliefs and expertise see clearly that he has committed innumerable assaults on our democracy and the rule of law, would be an act of cowardice on your part. I am sorry; sometimes things are just that clear.
I fear for all of us if Trump and cohort think they will not be called to the bar of justice. They are positioning themselves to try to steal the next two elections after which we will have no real elections.
Indictment will not be sufficient in and of itself, and our country will not soon heal from the past eight years of chaos and criminality at the very top. But to not indict would represent our death knell.
Of course, if these thieves of democracy are indicted, the authoritarians amongst us will scream and throw innumerable tantrums, but whatever will happen as a result of that is far, far less dangerous than stepping back and giving the public at large the clear signal that no one will protect them from criminality at the very top. Once all Americans of all political stripes see that, everything is on the table. There will, indeed, be American carnage in the streets.
Yes, indicting Trump is dangerous from a societal point of view, but not indicting him will be deadly to our country.
We are closer to civil war than at any time since The Civil War. But now there are more guns than people in the USA and many of those guns are assault weapons. Under these circumstances, our prospects are grim. Still, I fear that possible chaos less than autocracy.
Even if American democratic institutions withstand Trump et.al. in their next attempt to overthrow our government, we have no time to waste if such people are allowed to roam the halls of Congress and prevent climate change policies for the next few years. England is 'melting' -- there is no time to wait when it comes to reversing the policy that has lead us to dangerous heat on planet Earth.
These dual threats: the loss of democracy and the urgency of the climate crisis mean that we must have courage to turn both the ship of state and the tide of global warming.
Of course, many, many other issues concern me. Many of them far more personally important given my circumstances; however, if we allow these vicious people to destroy our government and our planet, all the other issues are moot.
You may see this as two entirely different problems, but they are not. The general inability of the vast majority of humans to protect themselves from the venality of a small percentage who want all the power and wealth only for themselves will end human civilization. Some humans may survive the coming climate catastrophe, but human culture of the past 10,000 years will not.
Sincerely Yours,
BlueDragon
