Morton’s, one of the more well-known purveyors of highly priced steaks in the country, may not be a venue often patronized by the dirty masses but really, that’s part of its cachet. As one of its favored patrons, you can order a prime Porterhouse with token trimmings (i.e., a parsley sprig) and no sides for a mere $79 while sipping an exponentially expensive seasonal Mourvèdre and end up spending more than your average “essential worker” earns in a week, especially if you have something to celebrate like forcing poor pregnant people to travel hundreds or even thousands of miles to terminate their unwanted two-week pregnancies as a result of your brilliant legal decisions.
For dessert you may be contemplating the white chocolate pecan bread pudding or perhaps, as some purists will recommend, simply the New York style cheesecake. A digestif, perhaps a small glass of Sambuca adorned with an (always) odd number of coffee beans provides the perfect complement to a pleasant evening.
It is most unfortunate, then, when such a royal repast is tainted with the rude interruption by hoi-polloi. But if you’re part of the Koch-funded malevolent majority currently occupying the Supreme Court of the United States, hell-bent on eviscerating the rights of half the population, best to sigh and concede to the inevitable.
As the outrage, faithfully reported by Politico’s Playbook, attests, on Wednesday political operative and accused (alleged) attempted rapist, aka Supreme Court Associate Justice Brett Kavanaugh, found himself accosted by protesters at Morton’s Washington, D.C., location who, heedless of their rank incivility, chose to voice their displeasure at Kavanaugh outside that fine establishment.
“THE RIGHT … TO EAT DINNER”— On Wednesday night, D.C. protesters targeting the conservative Supreme Court justices who signed onto the Dobbs decision overturning the constitutional right to abortion got a tip that Justice BRETT KAVANAUGH was dining at Morton’s downtown D.C. location. Protesters soon showed up out front, called the manager to tell him to kick Kavanaugh out and later tweeted that the justice was forced to exit through the rear of the restaurant.
Daniel Lippman looked into the incident for us and confirmed that account.
Responding to this unseemly melee, perennial right-wing target Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, tweeted her sympathies to the plight of the embattled Justice:
As Politico darkly notes, the Morton’s chain primly expressed its outrage :
“Honorable Supreme Court Justice Kavanaugh and all of our other patrons at the restaurant were unduly harassed by unruly protestors while eating dinner at our Morton’s restaurant. Politics, regardless of your side or views, should not trample the freedom at play of the right to congregate and eat dinner. There is a time and place for everything. Disturbing the dinner of all of our customers was an act of selfishness and void of decency.”
Kavanaugh, who during his confirmation hearing famously vowed to exact revenge on those who exposed his apparent drunken sexual proclivities, is doubtlessly home by now, further marinating his resentments at being denied his just dessert.
