They are not just offended that the temple of the Fat Golden God has been defiled. The guardians of the status quo, worshipers of quackery, converts to totalitarian rule of law, and believers – with all due respect to George Orwell – in strength through ignorance have three very practical reasons for apoplexy over a search warrant lawfully executed (even if one uses an “originalist” interpretation) in full accord with the Fourth and Fourteenth Amendments to the United States Constitution .
First of all, the quest puts one more crack in the porcelain of privilege. When the dithering MAGA doters and pundits say with outrage, “If they can do this to a former president, they can do this to any of us,” they don’t mean us (like you and me). They mean their us – the people with privilege who control the media and can afford $1,000+ per hour attorneys. They feel betrayed because the Faustian bargain struck with legislators, law enforcement, and legal operatives by a man with an address (presciently it turns out) of 666 has not insulated him in the way it was supposed to do and so it might fail to protect them as well. In their minds, it is a blight on the natural order.
As an adjunct to that breach, is a fear that there might be something in that trove of documents that could incriminate them. Maybe there is a record of the content of the calls Jim Jordan made on January 6, 2020, or a deed to a Kentucky mule ranch reserved for a bribe of Mitch McConnell. The wealthy and connected have absolutely no interest in protecting due process; they are terrified, instead, they might get what is due – long, long overdue. Yes, Virginia Thomas, there may be justice — not just a Justice you and your red hatted cronies wrangled onto the bench — and it could be coming for you.
Finally – and this is the horror they fear the most – there might be proof of what they have avoided all along: that the former president is not just a conman. He is the actual amoral narcissistic Machiavellian want-to-be dictator everybody in this country without their head firmly planted in his oversized rump has always known. Now what do you do, Senator Rubio, Cruz, Scott? How do you answer those precious few who still look up to you? “Gee, Daddy, I thought you said he was a good man? But I thought you were wise? How could he fool you for over four years?” They will have no clue, which has always been the case, but now everybody will know.
