Both candidates had primaries (Max a 3-way) and both won handily Tuesday night. I was in attendance at Max’s celebration and heard some of his agenda as he addressed the crowd. Our local paper published both statements. The differences between what Democrats are offering, vs Republicans couldn’t be clearer.
Nicole spewed:
“I’m facing a rematch in November with Max Rose,” said Rep. Malliotakis. “You guys remember him, right? He was that guy that walked in front of the [122nd] Precinct while they were holding disgusting signs attacking our police officers and chanting ‘Defund the police.’ That Max Rose. But you know what’s great about rematches? You know what’s great about reruns? We know how they end.”
Ha ha, very clever Nicole. So, what was it you will do for us constituents if elected? (It’s true, Max took part in a BLM march that took place right after the George Floyd incident. That was attended by people of all stripes and it was huge. Some did carry those signs, but Max never supported “DTP”).
Meanwhile, here’s what Max had to say Tuesday night:
“The truth is, we all want a government that will improve the economy, not control women’s bodies; we want safe schools and weapons of war off our streets; and we want a country where labor is respected, hard work is rewarded, and we see each other as neighbors not political combatants,” said Rose. “Congresswoman Malliotakis abandoned that America when she voted against protecting a woman’s right to choose and access to contraception, against legislation that would stop oil companies from price gouging, and against universal background checks to help end gun violence.”
The difference couldn’t be clearer. Instead of an agenda for us, Nicole is hauling out the old Republican playbook that helped her defeat Max last time around: in this case, nurse the hate with straw man invective using guilt by association. Well, I’ve got a little guilt by association for you Nicole: you associated yourself with 146 other Republicans to overturn the election — and now that I think of it, that’s not actual guilt by association, that’s pure guilt, plain and simple.
In contrast, Max wants to do positive stuff. Yes, he voices criticisms, but those are all on the record. I was only disappointed he didn’t add Nicole’s seditious vote in his remarks. I was able to grab his ear and voice that concern. He signaled he was aware of the issue. But the remarks sans sedition are what got published. Hopefully we’ll see some of that in the campaign going forward.
Unfortunately Nicole has a huge audience of MAGATs in the reddest borough in New York City. It’s the bedroom community for the city’s Police and firemen, not to mention red Brooklynite immigrants, so Max has an uphill battle again.
But seeing how things went in Kansas and in NY-19, maybe there’s hope after all. Staten Island did vote for Obama first term. And Max did win one term against a Republican. Who’da thunk.
Even though it looks like we may keep the Senate and then some, it will do us little good if we lose the House. Here’s a candidate that can use some help:
