Today, August 4, 2022,
is the 232nd birthday
of the UNITED STATES COAST GUARD,
AKA COAST GUARD DAY
The founding/inception in 1790 as the Revenue Cutter Service. It is Celebrated annually on August 4th, Coast Guard Day commemorates the anniversary of the founding of the U.S. Coast Guard as the Revenue-Marine in 1790.
On August 4, 1790, Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton established the Revenue-Marine to serve as an armed customs enforcement service. In 1894, it was renamed the Revenue Cutter Service. In 1915, it merged with the U.S. Life-Saving Service. Thus the United States Coast Guard was formed.
The Coast Guard is an important maritime first responder. The Coast Guard is the principal Federal agency responsible for maritime safety, security, and environmental stewardship in U.S. ports and waterways.
The Coast Guard is one of the six Armed Services of the United States, and the only military branch within the Department of Homeland Security.
In addition to its role as an Armed Service, the Coast Guard is a first responder and humanitarian service that provides aid to people in distress or impacted by natural and man-made disasters whether at sea or ashore.
The Coast Guard is a member of the Intelligence Community and is law enforcement and regulatory agency with broad legal authorities associated with maritime transportation, hazardous materials shipping, bridge administration, oil spill response, pilotage, and vessel construction and operation.
Coast Guard Day is a day to thank, honor, and celebrate the Coastguards (aka “Coasties”), both active duty and reserve, as well as retirees, civilian employees, dependants, and auxiliaries. Coast Guard units across the country organize picnics and sports competitions.
Also, I spent four years in the Coast Guard, having been stationed in Alameda, Guam, and San Francisco.
