Recent elections have given us hope for holding on to the House. Alaska At-Large and NY-19 were unexpected victories, with Mary Peltola and Pat Ryan edging out Republicans who were favored to win. Pundits have credited widespread rage over the Dobbs decision and limited enthusiasm for the Big Lie for the unexpected results.
In WA-3, the MAGAs have given us a gift. Democratic nominee Marie Gluesenkamp Perez will face Trump-endorsed wingnut Joe Kent. Kent finished second to Gluesenkamp Perez in Washington’s non-partisan open primary, splitting the Republican vote with incumbent Jamie Herrera Beutler.
Herrera Beutler would have lost just as many votes as Kent over the Dobbs decision, but Kent will drive away anyone who does not share Trump’s delusion of a stolen 2020 election.
This will likely be critical: Herrera Beutler has been far more popular in the district than Trump.
Herrera Beutler earned Trump’s ire by voting to impeach him after the MAGAs stormed the Capitol, voting in favor of the Jamuary 6th Commission and providing the world with the famous line from Kevin McCarthy quoting Trump; “'Well, Kevin, I guess these people are more upset about the election than you are.”
In 2016, Herrera Beutler won by 24 points; Trump, who she had not endorsed, won the district by only 7. In 2020, she won by 13 points while Trump won by only 4.
This strongly suggests that Kent’s strategy of hitching himself to Trump is a losing one in WA-3 if we have a good candidate and a reasonable level of funding.
We have the good candidate.
Marie Gluesenkamp Perez is a small-business owner and mother, supports reproductive rights and legislation to negate Citizens United, and champions labor and small business.
We need a reasonable level of funding.
You know what to do.
