Just a short post...I feel so incredibly proud of the Democratic Party right now that I’m both bursting with joy and tearing up. Today, I have witnessed perhaps the most diverse political party in United States history unite in their support of Hakeem Jeffries, who has now been the top vote-getter in two votes for Speaker of the House. Black. Hispanic. Asian. White. Women. Men. Gay. Straight. Voting for a black man for Speaker of the House.
On the other side, the almost all-white Republicans are divided, contentious, and chaotic.
But this wasn’t just a fluke occurrence today. Throughout the past two years, this wonderfully bright, dynamic, colorful group of Democrats has united to pass hugely important bills into law. They did the work that was necessary to help move Americans forward: they disagreed, they argued, they talked, they compromised with one another.
But in the end, this group pulled together and passed incredibly meaningful legislation for this country. In the end, they put their egos and differences aside for the good of the American people. So, their unity today should come as no surprise to anyone.
On the other hand, the inability of Republicans to govern should come as no surprise to anyone. Over the past dozen years or so, their anger and hatred have grown to the point where, now, they turn on each other. They are more interested in scoring points with the MAGA crowd than they are in meaningful governance.
And for the second time in two years, they have promoted chaos in Washington instead of promoting a smooth transfer of power, even to themselves. They are ripping each other apart. They are selfish and dangerous and don’t deserve to hold the reins of government.
Meanwhile, across the aisle, the beautifully diverse Democrats hold firm and strong — and united.
