If Jordan becomes speaker, say goodbye to any chance of getting more Ukrainian aid. Even worse, we will almost certainly have the choice between a government shutdown and really draconian spending cuts. If anybody disagrees with these assertions, please enlighten me in the comments.
Everybody is currently praising House Democrats sticking with Jeffries. He’s a good man and if enough Republicans can be convinced to cross the aisle that would just be splendid. But how realistic is that expectation? Like it or not, Democrats should really consider working with some of the saner Republicans to support a less awful candidate from their party.
Republicans are incapable of resolving this mess on their own without elevating a really evil man to the speakership and third in line for the presidency. Like it or not it is necessary for the Democratic House Caucus will probably need to do the heavy lifting.
