Mastodon provides the option to embed posts on other websites, similar to the exTwitter posts that I frequently see embedded on Daily Kos. I tried to embed a post from Carl Bergstrom, but Daily Kos rejected it with the following message:
1 non-whitelisted iframe(s) have been removed from your story:
https://fediscience.org/@ct_bergstrom/111197903569589101/embed
I think it’s important that progressives support alternatives to exTwitter, which has increasingly become a fascist propaganda mill over the past year (I’ll elaborate in a future post).
If this is a technical problem on the Mastodon side, I’d be happy to report it to their issue tracker if anyone can tell me what the problem is.
If this is simply a matter of identifying ‘reliable’ Mastodon instances to whitelist, I’ll suggest the following science and medicine-themed instances that have a bunch of responsible, thoughtful people on them who are probably taking care to make sure their instance is not run by a jerk…
mastodon.social/...
fediscience.org/…
mathstodon.xyz/...
genomic.social/…
https://ecoevo.social/about
https://mstdn.science/about
med-mastodon.com/…
scicomm.xyz/…
critcare.social/…
sauropods.win/…
dair-community.social/…
fedisabled.social/… (don’t let the ‘0 active users’ stat fool you)
Edit: At least two members of Congress are posting to Mastodon accounts, both on mastodon.social:
Representatives Shontel Brown mastodon.social/…
Representative Joaquin Castro mastodon.social/...
note: I confirmed that the embed restriction also applies to mastodon.social (the flagship instance) and mathstodon.xyx (a large math-focused instance)
p.s. I guess the alternative is to include a screenshot with a link… but in that case, we should disable Twitter embedding also, since the owner is an anti-democratic conspiracy theorist.
p.p.s: sending this to the Help Desk.
