Rebecca Gaunt of the Cobb County Courier in Georgia (adjacent to the City of Atlanta) dug through the depositions in a lawsuit about the gerrymandering of the school board disticts to pack Black and Hispanic voters into three districts to avoid overturning the white Republican majority on the board.
The white chairman held at least one secret meeting with the GOP-aligned law firm chosen without a bid to draw the maps, then lied about it to Black board members when challenged during a school board meeting.
It’s a compelling story, and Gaunt did a great job slogging through tedious court records and school board meeting videos to piece together the article, and the chronology at the bottom of the piece.
The district is notorious for its book bans, anti-CRT and ban on the 1619 Project, and for recently sending out a really wacky right-wing email on the taxpayer’s dime.
