The U.S. infant mortality rate rose 3% last year — the largest increase in two decades, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
White and Native American infants, infant boys and babies born at 37 weeks or earlier had significant death rate increases. The CDC’s report, published Wednesday, also noted larger increases for two of the leading causes of infant deaths — maternal complications and bacterial meningitis.
The report did not delve into the cause of the increase, but most of the babies born in 2022 were conceived in 2021, when maternal deaths rose by 40 percent because of the pandemic and many pregnant women were taken ill.
That is from the CDC – so infant deaths has gone up 3% which is a large jump, after staying pretty steady for a long time. Reading the Guardian, and NYT article on this… they are great in that they note the increase, that the increase is an average across all states, but the biggest jumps are in Texas, Georgia, Iowa, and Missouri — experienced statistically significant increases in infant mortality last year.
Nevada was the only state that decreased number of deaths…..
So what all the articles and the CDC report avoided – was speculation on why. I feel no such restraint – and the rest of this is just my opinion. Anything below this line is my opinion.
- Abortions – or the lack of them increases mortality – why because if you are poor and they won’t let you abort if there is a problem with the fetus, why do prenatal? It cost money, money people don’t have. Unfortunately, that means lots of women who don’t see a doctor until she is in labor. So, STD’s are fatal to babies going through the birth canal – if they had been treated it could have been avoid. See the problems on Congenital syphilis.
- Abortions – leaving a woman out in the parking lot until she is close enough to dying – upsets medical staff and they end up moving out of so called prolife states, meaning that OB-Gyn staff is getting rarer – creating staff shortages, which means mothers and new borns don’t get the level of care they need.
- Poverty/cost of medical care is closing rural area hospitals/labor departments. If you have to travel a couple of hours to see a care provider, or to deliver There will be less visits, less prenatal and complications with labors that happen on the way to the closest provider.
- Abortions – antiabortion folks have been harassing clinics (like Planned Parenthood and others) requiring them to have hospital level layouts, equipment, hospital privileges ect … any thing that can be used to shut them down. Problem is that for the poor and middle class medical care has become too expensive. And these clinics didn’t just do abortions, they provided STD screening, prenatal care, birthcontrol ect… When they close, or waste their funds on lawsuits, they lose the ability to provide these services, and for a lot of folks there is no other source for the services within their budgets.
Reading comments on the articles I saw folks blaming the vaccines, issue is anti-vaccine states had the highest jump in deaths.
Reading comments on the articles I saw folks blame black people for the jump, but the articles from the CDC ect…are clear the jump was in white and native American people as well…
Reading comments on the articles I saw folks blame obesity – but that factor didn’t change in the couple of years the jump was in.
Reading the comments on the articles I saw folks blame the age of mothers, but one of the biggest jumps was in women 25-30, not older mothers.
Basically, like the pro-gun folks they look for any excuse but the guns. Folks it’s the guns.
Basically, the anti-abortion folks are looking for any excuse but abortion laws, Folks it’s the abortion laws.
The increases where highest in the states that were first to create the harshest anti-abortion laws — see Texas rate increase of maternal and infant deaths.
What they didn’t mention is also the increase in maternity deaths, its not just the babies dying. Anti-Abortion laws removes a woman’s human rights, which leaves her with few rights and protections during the most dangerous time of her life – while giving birth.
And note the infant mortality rates don’t include in their numbers pre-born – because the number one cause of death of pregnant women is death by domestic partner. Its number one, more than the top 3 illness combined. And in that case it is usually the guns as well.
Basically since Dodd as a nation we have killed a lot of women and actual infants. Not fetus, but real infants, real women — not a clumps of cells. Pro-Life stances kill
