And I mean EVERYONE! Every f***ing member of Congress who thinks the “hordes of invaders” pouring across our southern border is more horrible should be made to sit and remember what we watched in horror as Russia brutally invaded Ukraine. Along with the tankies who would have Ukraine give up. There is a warning at the beginning that “Viewer Discretion is Advised” because it is graphic (maybe not everyone will have the ability to watch it). But the journalist, doctors, soldiers and citizens of Mariupol wanted the graphic truth to get out to the world.
I just finished watching PBS:Frontline “20 Days in Mariupol”. I don’t think I stopped crying for 1½ hours, and the tears are still flowing as I write this. I’m not sure how well I will sleep tonight. But I felt I owed it to the people of Ukraine to watch it. Too many of them don’t sleep well any night.
It brings back the reality of what we witnessed from afar at the beginning of the war and how we searched for news and looked for ways to help. Mark Sumner wrote the first Ukraine Update on 2/24/2022. DKos has kept us informed for the last 637 days due to the diligence of Mark, kos, anniele, quaoar, RO37 and all those in our community that belong on the list. The coverage we find here has drawn many to DKos to find in-depth, well sourced articles.
Even though I read about Ukraine every day now, look at the maps to see if the lines have changed, check out the charts of what the Russians have lost today, watch the videos of explosions and dead Russian soldiers, learn about logistics and follow discussions of what the US, NATO and UAF should be doing, this documentary reminds me of the toll on civilians that is too easily lost as the war goes on.
Slava Ukraini!
*There is an article on the PBS Frontline website: A Note From FRONTLINE’s Editor-in-Chief & EP About ’20 Days in Mariupol’ which gives some background about the how they came about making the documentary with Ukrainian AP video journalist Mstyslav Chernov, photographer Evgeniy Maloletka and field producer Vasilisa Stepanenko who were the last journalists to leave Mariupol. There is also a Q&A interview with Chernov: ‘20 Days in Mariupol’ Filmmaker on What is Left of the City After the Russian Invasion.
